My Take on Men’s Leather Belts

vintage leather belt

OK, so you’ve got it all down: the perfect fitting clothes, the right color combinations and a great pair of shoes. You’re going out and you want to look your best. While there are at least a dozen accessories you could wear (all of which are being covered in my book), there is one in particular which will give you that slick, manly look> the belt.

While there are several types of belt fabrics, I want to focus today on the highest quality one: leather.

Leather belts are versatile. They can be part of either a casual or formal attire and, when in harmony with the rest of the outfit, they will accentuate the pants and shirt or t-shirt. They can be worn at any age and will go well with probably 95% of all the clothes you have in your closet right now (mixing and matching them is another story, though).

But you can’t wear leather belts in any way that you want. There are certain rules that you must follow to avoid making a style blunder. Formal leather belts are thinner and usually have no patterns on them.

You can wear those with a suit or you can “borrow” them in your casual outfits (like I do all the time).

Casual belts, on the other hand, can’t play in both teams. They’re bigger, have a more rugged aspect and a bigger, more colorful buckle.

Take this amazing leather belt from Superdry’s men clothing range:

This one won’t work with a suit but it will look amazing with jeans. Notice the vintage vibe it gives off.

Quick question: how would you match this belt? If you’ve been reading around the site for a while, the answer should come easy to you:

Repeat the orange on the buckle!

Here’s another one. This one you can match to a pair of leather lace-up shoes or moccasins.

Matching your leather belt

If you want to be part of the fashion elite, you can’t stop here, though. To give off a sexual vibe, you have to match the belt with the other accessories in your attire. You can match the leather belt with:

  • a leather bracelet
  • your leather wallet
  • your leather shoes

There is something manly about leather, as long as you don’t overdo it. Repeating leather in your outfit show that you didn’t happen to wear it by accident. This is the real way to stand out from the crowd, not by wearing those ridiculous logo t-shirts.

So my take on leather belts is… they are fantastic!
