The debate over formal wear being made compulsory in all universities is contentious. Although the idea has been discussed several times, and people across the world argue that formal wear helps set a high academic standard, no rules have been put into place regarding formal wear at university – as of yet. Despite the convenience of wearing your own clothes to the lecture hall, formal wear provides university students with more time to find that all-important custom essay, or an extra 10 minutes in bed. Find out why we think formal wear should be made compulsory in all universities below.

Saves time

No matter where you sit on the formal wear in university debate, it’s difficult to deny that there are a few benefits. While some university students are more than happy to roll out of bed and head out the door wearing any old clothes, others carefully pick out their outfits for the day. Creating a comfortable yet ‘cool’ look can be a time consuming process. But, compulsory formal wear makes getting ready in the morning a little easier, and much quicker.

Dress for success

Research has shown that when university goers wear smart clothes, they achieve more. Dressing for success doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a suit, complete with a blazer and tie. ‘Formal’ wear can simply mean a collared polo top for men and a button up blouse for women. What you wear can have an impact on your performance. Think about it; you’re more likely to be productive wearing a smart shirt, than rolling up to a 9am lecture in a sweatshirt.

Saves money

Keeping up with the latest trends is costly, even though it doesn’t have to be. While your all-time favourite jumper cost you £44.00 from Topshop, others strive to find bargains in vintage outlets. No matter what, formal university dress codes will allow university students to save their limited amount of money. A formal wardrobe can be made up of few staple pieces, such as a smart skirt and array of blouses, one for each day of the week for women, and a suit appropriate to be worn with a selection of shirts and ties for men.

Sense of equality

A formal dress code at university eliminates competition between students for who’s wearing the best – and the latest – fashion trend. Formal wear doesn’t just help ensure that the integrity within university is maintained. Having a non-discriminatory dress code policy that outlines what is expected of every student in relation to appearance improves feelings of inclusiveness, without eliminating individuality.

Appropriate dressing

If not already, as soon as students spread their wings outside of home, they will be required to get a job. Formal wear in university will help prepare students for what is expected of their attire in the work place. In business today, there is a trend of setting rules about employee’s work wardrobe. While large corporations require their employees to dress in a certain way, small and medium sized enterprisers aren’t quite as strict. Getting university students into the routine of wearing formal wear, and understanding what is and what isn’t appropriate for the work place and university alike, will prevent them making avoidable workwear mistakes in the future – which could cost them their job!

So you’re ready to do it, eh? You’re ready to take your girl down the aisle and put a ring on her finger. And you’re wondering what you should wear when all eyes are on you.

If you’re not comfortable wearing a nonconformist wedding look (separate pants and jacket) but you don’t want a black suit either, there is a better choice: the tuxedo.

You can look at the tuxedo as a fancy dark suit. The wearer sends the following message when he wears it: the event that I’m attending is very important to me.

The things that define a tux are its satin insertions. The tux collars usually made of satin and, as you can imagine, it gives the groom (that’s you!) a very special aura. The jacket’s buttons are also made of satin. You may also find satin in other places such as the pockets or pants.

With that being said, here’s my best tips for buying that perfect tux.

First off, it has to fit you perfectly. I know I said this a million times before in regards with all clothes but this is critical. After all, it’s your own wedding.

Get a tux that’s the right size, then take it to a tailor for further adjustments. Here’s the entire checklist, make sure you go through it one by one:

– The jacket should allow for lots of movement in the shoulder area. Raise your arms until they are parallel to the ground and see if you feel any resistance. If you do, the tux jacket might be too small for you

– Don’t wear shoulder pads unless you have to. If you’re tall and/or well built, you don’t need them. if you’re of average height or shorter, you can choose a jacket with padded shoulders but make sure it’s the pad isn’t too obvious

– Pay good attention to the jacket’s length. Traditional tailors suggest it should end just below your behind but modern trends suggest a shorter jacket, that ends somewhere near teh middle of that anatomic part. 🙂

– Be extremely careful about the pant’s length. Do not, under any circumstances, let your pants break too many times at the base of your legs. Aim (just like in casual wear) for a perfect fit. ideally, the pants should end right on the sole of your shoes.

Which reminds me: pay special attention to your shoes. Get a nice pair that matches your tux. You can even go for suede leather to make things interesting.

Off the rack or bespoke?

If you can, definitely go for a bespoke. The best way to ensure a great fit (and thus, clear the entire checklist above) is to let a professional tailor do the hard work.

Find a good tailor, tell him exactly what you want and he’ll do the rest. If you don’t know anyone, use the Internet to search and compare. If you’re located in Australia, I’ll save you the trouble and recommend one of the Germanicos tailors. (One thing that caught my eye is that they have over 3000 fabrics at their disposal!)

Color

I would recommend that you stick to a black tux, since you’re the groom. Starting with that, you can make the outfit more interesting by adding a nice pair of shoes (suede?) a nice belt (suede also?) a white shirt and a colored bow tie.

The bow tie can be anything really but it would be great if you could color match it with your pocket square, your floral decoration or – you guessed it – your bride.

It only takes a second to look at the old poster on the left and notice how stylish he is. The white and yellow bow tie is matched with the white hat with the yellow ribbon.

Style isn’t something new. Style was a way to distinguish true gentlemen from the average guy… and it STILL is.

If you’re a serious style student of mine, you probably know a lot of “tricks” to make your outfits stand out from the crowd. Things like rolling up your trousers or shirts and going sockless are just a few of the most popular ones. But a solid knowledge base is what you should aim for because it is much more important.

Most formal style boos are rather boring unless you’re passionate about style. That’s why I’m about to give you 3 style tips that I handpicked in my years of research in the field.

You can find dozens more tips in my Be Stylish ™ package but rest assured these are the most important ones. Ready? Here we go.

Principle #1: the man comes before the clothes

You have to understand that the purpose of clothes is to make YOU look good. It’s not about finding quirky ways of mixing and matching accessories.

The purpose of wearing any clothing item is to send a positive message about you that, in the end, will make people look into your eyes and think “this is someone who I definitely want to meet”.

What does this all mean, then?

Simply put, a simple and elegant outfit can often times make a more lasting impression than if you were wearing a really eccentric one. This depends on the social encounter, obviously, but this is as true today as it was a hundred years ago.

A nice fitting suit and a nice pair of black or brown leather shoes will convey more power and charisma than an over-accessorized casual outfit.

Remember this: every item of clothing you put on you has a very important mission: it’s sending a message about you. So make sure it is the right message.

Principle #2: Fit is king

If you ever wondered where this saying is coming from, it has its roots in formal style. Any item of clothing should flatter your body lines and give the impression that it was made for you. Sometimes, having custom clothes made is the best. Other times, buying the off the rack and have them adjusted is good enough. Just remember that slim fit is becoming more and more popular, trumping regular fit and baggy clothes.

Pay extra attention to the length of your clothes’ sleeves. I’m talking particularly about shirts, suit jackets, sports jackets, blazers, v-necks and roundneck sweaters.

The shirt’s cuff should be 1 or 2 inches visible from underneath the top that you’re wearing. This means you probably need to adjust all your shirts and jackets. Your tailor is there to help you so don’t be afraid to put him to work – that’s his job.

Principle #3: Formal accessories work

Have you ever worn cufflinks? How about a bow tie or a fedora? If you haven’t, I suggest you take my suggestion seriously and start buying them. Just because formal style is often associated with something old, this doesn’t mean it’s outdated.

If anything, formal style is making a comeback and is merging with casual style to form a modern mixture that’s pleasing to the eye and attracts a lot of attention.

So here’s what I want you to do. From the list of accessories below, choose 3 of them and commit that you’ll look for them in malls the next time you go shopping. Do we have a deal?

  • cufflinks
  • ties
  • bow ties
  • fedoras
  • classic umbrellas
  • pocket qatches
  • pocket squares
  • slim/formal belts
  • tie bars and tie clips

Any of the above accessories will draw a lot of attention from women because they magically transform you into a powerful man. If anything, you should be careful when you’re wearing them.

I’ve recently had a reader ask a very interesting question. In case you didn’t know, I’m sharing my expertise for free here on the blog (so go ahead and ask me anything you want about men’s fashion and style).

The question goes like this:

Hello George, I’m attending a republican party dinner I will be with Girlfriend and county legislators and a Senator, I’m a working stiff I want to look damn good help brother what color jacket pants shirt tie I have small budget is there hope using those online stores or can Macy’s or JC Penny pull it off for me.

My answer? Two words: black tie.

The event is a formal dinner. A lot of important people will be there. This means you have to think more about the event itself and less about standing out in a bold way.

Black tie is THE dress code for formal dinners. It’s different than a business attire or even something you would wear to a wedding. Wear a black tie when the event has a high level of formality or when the invitation to that even specifically mentions *black tie* as the mandatory dress code.

Ok, with the definition out of the way, let’s see the components of a black tie attire. You’ll see for yourself how easy it is to put one together.

The components of the black tie dress

  • A black jacket with silk lapel facings (we’ll talk about those later)
  • Black suit pants
  • A black cummerbund or waistcoat
  • A white dress shirt
  • A silk black bow-tie
  • Black socks
  • Black shoes

Ok let’s break it down one by one

The Jacket

The dinner jacket is the only thing you can wear at a black tie event. Normally this comes as a set with the pants as part of the tuxedo – so please – don’t wear the separately.

It is usually ventless, which means it doesn’t have any slits in the back. I’m sure you’ve noticed the vents on your other suits, right? They should have either one in the center or two at the sides. Dinner jackets, however, don’t have any vents at all.

One more thing: tuxedo jackets should be single breasted. I know you may sometimes find double breasted jackets but my advice is… stay away form them!

OK, now that we established that, at a black tie event, you want to be dressed like a gentleman and follow the rules, let’s continue with…

The Trousers

As you can imagine, the trousers match the color and fabric of the jacket. They can be black or midnight blue, the only acceptable colors for a black tie event.

A few critical things about the trousers that can make it or break it:

  • black tie trousers have no cuffs at the bottom
  • They are NEVER worn with a belt. Suspenders are the only acceptable accessory to hold them.
  • The outer seams are also made of silk to match the lapels on the dinner jacket

The Shirt

The shirt’s color should be white – plain and simple. If style, this website or even me mean anything to you – stay away from colored shirts during a black tie event! OK, maybe you don’t care about me *that much* but you SHOULD care about your black tie etiquette.

The Tie

Well, this is going to surprise you but a black tie attire doesn’t involve a black tie per se. Well, some less knowledgeable folks will actually wear one, but the only thing you can hang around your neck is a black bow tie.

If you don’t have one, it’s time to get it. Just be really careful about a few things.

1. The bow tie should be 100% made of silk to match the lapels on the jacket.
2. The bow tie should not be a clip-on. Clip-ons are for kids, you need a really, classic, bow tie.

Socks and Shoes

I already said in the beginning that you should go for black socks and shoes. I know this may seem like a little too much black for you in one attire, but this is the only way to go. I’ll give you some tips on how to stand out in just a moment but first, let me finish with this.

The shoes should be obviously leather and should be lace-ups. Loafers are unacceptable.

The socks can be either cotton or silk and they should be long enough to go high enough on your calves.

Ways To Stand Out

I know we’ve been talking a lot here at Be Stylish about standing out. A black tie event is an exception. A big one.

The best way to stand out is to follow the rules to the letter and show everyone that you’re a style connoisseur.

Let me tell you: most guys will shamelessly break the black tie rules… because they don’t know and they don’t care. But you won’t, as long as you put some thought into your clothes.

The fact of the matter is… there ARE a few ways to stand out. Not by much but still.

The first one is to choose a peak lapel with your dinner jacket. The pointy nature of the lapels will give you a more confident look while still following all the black tie rules.

The second way to stand out is to forget black and go for a midnight blue.

Really?? Can you really break the rules in such a bold way as to change the entire suit color? Are we still talking about black tie?

Indeed we are. I can assure you that midnight blue is also acceptable, though not as common as black. Midnight blue is actually a very dark blue, even darker than navy blue (which I’m sure you know about).

The third way to stand out is… the boutonniere. A boutonniere is simply a small flower that one can add to the suit jacket. Some dinner jackets have a small button hole on their left lapel – this is where you can insert the flower.

Careful with this one, it might be out of place for some black-tie events.

And the fourth way to stand out is actually the easiest: wear a white pocket square. Most guys won’t so, why shouldn’t you?

While some folks also recommend an ivory-colored pocket square, I say you should stick to white, so that it matches your shirt.

Question: have you ever attended a black-tie event before. What were men wearing and what were YOU wearing?

Well, I just drove back home from another wedding. It was really exciting to attend a 5-star wedding at a 5-star hotel, while the groom is a 5-star friend of mine. I had to look sharp – and I did.

I’ll save the pictures for last but, for now,I’ll just tell you what I wore. I leave it to you to put together in your head my entire outfit – just to practice. Here goes:

– dark-brown pinstripe suit
– light-blue simple dress shirt
– dark brown shoes and socks
– blue tie with brown stripes
– patterned pocket square

Since I was the man of honor, I arrived early at the goom’s house, after a 2-hour drive, and as I walked to the gate, he warmly shook my hand and said:

George, you look sharp, my friend.

And here’s the kicker: the camera was right next to us, shooting every word of the conversation!

Normally you don’t want to be dressed better than the groom… but I was.. oops!

(Hey, I’m the “style transformer”, right? BTW: I have an entire chapter dedicated to suits in my Be Stylish ™ package.)

Aaaand, this is me:

(Caveat: the tie node was a little off in this picture. It’s a good thing when you have a style-savvy friend next to you to tell you about these things.)

Here’s a few tips about dressing for a wedding.

#1 Dress formally!

I can’t stress this enough. Weddings are formal events, this means you should always be wearing a suit. Forget chino pants, forget even dress pants paired with sports jackets. Sports jackets and blazers are for casual situations.

Also, do NOT mix the pants from one suit with the suit jacket of another suit. 2-piece and 3-piece suits are meant to be worn together and.

#2 Forget loafers

This advice should have been included in the first piece of advice, but it’s better that we discuss it separately. Loafers are casual, lace-ups are formal. Always go for shoes with laces when you attend a wedding, otherwise you’ll show great disrespect to the bride and the groom.

#3 Get the right suit color

Did you notice how I have a slightly darker skin complexion and dark hair? This is why I chose a dark suit, then paired it with a light-colored shirt. had I had lighter skin, I would have done the reverse: lighter-colored suit and a darker shirt.

#4 Wear your pocket square.

Shocking observation: though there were over 200 guests at my friend’s wedding, not one of them was wearing a pocket square! These guys don’t know what they’re missing out on.

Question: what did you wear on your last wedding?

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to dress stylishly when going out, you’ve probably asked yourself: “What can I wear at work?”

The work environment is often stressful, exhausting and full of people focused on their daily tasks. You can’t just go ahead and wear the same clothes you would wear in a club. You need to project confidence, seriousness and that you’re a professional in your field.

The whole idea behind smart casual outfits is to make the employees more relaxed and to allow them to better express themselves. This is all to make them more productive and happy at their workplace, by offering them an alternative to wearing suits.

The secret to looking sharp in any situation

Smart casual (often used interchangeably with business casual) is THE dress code for the work environment. But before we get into the “how to”s of smart casual, let me teach you something that is far better.

This thing applies to men’s style in general and is the key to putting together any outfit for any social interaction.

The secret is learning to assess the environment and dress accordingly. Remember how I said earlier you can’t wear a club outfit to work? This isn’t to say I’m stopping you from being who you are, but rather to dress for the occasion.

Expressing yourself through clothes is just as important as looking around and dressing under certain limits.

So how SHOULD you dress for work?

Let’s assess the work environment of a regular 9-to-5 office job. The work environment in such cases has certain characteristics:

  • No physical work involved; not much moving around.
  • People are usually focused on their tasks, they have pretty tight schedule so they don’t socialize that much.
  • The workspace is small, lights are mostly artificial, people work in cubicals.
  • People either are or becoming professionals in this field so they need to be taken seriously.

I know what you’re thinking: This all sounds very familiar, George, but what the hell does this have to do with dressing?

It has everything to do with dressing and, specifically, the smart casual code. Let me draw some conclusions first, and you’ll immediately see “the light”.

  • No physical work involved; not much moving around: no need for boots, you can wear leather shoes (which usually kill your feet when walking long distances but in this case they are perfect)
  • People are usually focused on their tasks, they have pretty tight schedule so they don’t socialize that much: no flashy colors, not too much layering or standing out through accessories which will distract attention
  • The workspace is small, lights are mostly artificial, people work in cubicals: don’t wear too many layers of clothes, don’t stand out too much
  • People either are or becoming professionals in this field so they need to be taken seriously: wear darker colors but have something that makes you stand out in a subtle way. You don’t want to be perceived as too relaxed or too cool.

Now it’s time to make two lists: one with clothing items you can wear, and one with items you cant’ wear.

You can wear…

  • dress pants, chinos
  • dress shirts
  • ties
  • leather shoes, loafers
  • formal/slim belts
  • sports jackets
  • cardigans
  • sleevless vests
  • watches

You can or cannot wear jeans, depending on your type of job. But if you can, do avoid them in business-casual situations. For instance, if you’re a programmer, it’s most likely that all your colleagues are wearing jeans and t-shirt. Go one step further and wear jeans and a shirt.

You can’t wear…

  • Sneakers, slip-ons
  • t-shirts
  • leather bracelets
  • sandals
  • leather jackets (this is debatable – if the people in your environment are underdressed, you might be able to pull this off)
  • … and so on

But wait! There’s one critical factor that you need to consider before deciding what to wear to work on Monday morning. And that factor is…

What are others wearing?

This may sound like, if this is what’s important, we might as well wear what they are wearing and get it over with. Not exactly the case.

Here’s the deal: in many companies (software for instance) 95% of employees wear jeans. It’s just how things evolved.

While smart casual is for office jobs and a software engineer has an office job… he can safely wear jeans at work.

Wearing dress pants when everyone else wears jeans might upset some people. That’s not a problem if you’re serious about your professional and personal development but what if you boss dresses in jeans too?

Dressing more formally than him might put him in a bad light.

So take the two lists and reread them but also consider what everyone else is wearing at work – especially your boss. This is a side about smart casual wearing that not too many people think or talk about.

Some companies have their own dress code and a list with what you can or can’t wear at work. Whether yours has one or not, it’s up to you to decide what clothing items you can include in your smart casual outfits. Who knows, if you dress stylishly at work, a raise could follow soon.

If you’re like me trying to build a business, you know how competitive things are. Nowadays everyone is a business expert. Every kid in the street can’t wait to give some business advice (and they think they’re clever too!)

Whatever decisions you take in your business is up to you but what I’m going to do is make sure you look sharp in those business meetings.

It’s my job as an image consultant to give you both the good and the bad news: the fashion rules of business have changed!

You need every extra edge you can get to seal the deal and make more money. That’s why I want you, I urge you to dress 5 times better than your potential partner.

This is no time to “not give a damn”: the better dressed you are, the richer you will appear. So let’s take a look at some of my best tricks that will SCREAM to others that you’re the next Donald Trump.

1. Wear a pocket square!

Wearing a suit just won’t do it anymore. Look, if you want to be perceived as the next billionaire, if you want people to KNOW that they can make money with you, you have to show you’re willing to step out of the crowd.

And what better way to do than than to wear a pocket square?

Think about it: you’ll still wear your suits and, at the same time, you get to show “you’ve got it”.

Pocket squares have been worn with suits ever since the beginning of the 20th century and they’re STILL fashionable. Even more, men have started wearing them with casual outfits.

I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get one or ever a set of 3.

2. Try a pair of brown shoes!

Black leather shoes are great but brown is the new black. You’re not like most men – you want to dress to stand out. A pair of brown shoes will make the world of difference. Just make sure you match them with a brown belt.

3. Wear cufflinks!

One accessory that’s less visible than the pocket square (but can make an even greater impact!) are cufflinks. For this you’ll need a shirt with a french cuff but trust me, it’s well worth the money.

Match the buttons with your eyes if you have them blue or green – the effect is amazing.

4. Get a stylish messenger bag

Don’t be like the next businessman with your black leather suit case that screams “I’m a geek outside the office too!” Get a nice messenger men’s bag with a stylish shape. Make sure it’s big enough, though, to be able to contain all your papers.

5. Go for a gray suit

If you don’t want to switch black shoes for brown, how about your black suit for gray? Even better, wear your new gray suit WITH your brown shoes.

Gray is versatile and communicates class. It can also be matched with both black shoes and brown shoes.

6. Wear a trench coat

Trench coats are THE #1 solution for your suit on rainy days. They’re fashionable, they’re versatile and they look good.

If you think wearing business clothes is a surefire way of feeling uncomfortable 8 hours a day, think again. You’ve probably took style advice from your colleagues or boss who, most likely, don’t know the basics of fashion.

One of the qualities that separate the winners from the losers is preparedness. As a businessman or manager, you never know when you have to meet a client or jump into a meeting. That’s why you have to be prepared every single day to make a lasting first impression.

Have you noticed the difference in your partners’ reactions when you come dressed stylishly versus generic? If you got better responses, if the communication was way better and if you essentially made more money.. I’m here to say: clothes played their own part in this!

So let’s go ahead and see some basics about building your business wardrobe.

It all starts with a suit…

I know what you’re thinking: Oh no! he’s going to tell me to wear a suit! I knew it!

The fact of the matter is, you can wear a suit and STILL feel comfortable as in a pair of shorts. You just need to know the basic things about how to choose the clothes that fit you (which I’ve discussed a lot in my book).

The next thing is to think about the colors you’ll be wearing…

White suits have no place in your business wardrobe! Darker colors such as gray, navy or black show that you’re a serious person who wants to do business.

And finally you need to consider your shirts and ties…

Matching them is the fun part as it puts your creativity to work. The better you match them -> the better responses you will get from those involved in the business meetings -> the more successful you will be.

If you want something simple, go with a white shirt.

If you want something that will trigger more emotional reactions, go for a striped shirt with a matching tie and pocket square. This is harder to achieve but here’s a few pointers to get you started:

  • Don’t wear too many patterns on you. For instance, a herringbone suit, a striped shirt an a striped tie will make your outfit look too busy. The viewer’s eyes will grow tired and you won’t get those positive responses anymore.
  • Never match your tie and pocket square. many stores offer the tie and pocket square as a set. They have the exact colors and patterns on them. This is a biggie – don’t do it!
  • Make contrasts between your shirt and your suit jacket. A black suit and a black shirt will make you look… shady.

Still don’t know where to start with color matching? Here’s a few color combinations for your business suits:

  • Black suit, white shirt, navy blue tie and white pocket square
  • Dark gray suit, orange shirt, gray tie
  • Navy blue suit, light blue shirt, striped tie (blue and white) and a white pocket square.

The combinations are infinite. You just need to form your eye and start looking like a million dollars!

P.S. One last thing: the office is no place to make a fashion statement. You’re there to make money and you don’t want to appear too.. colorful. If you’re afraid you’ll make some blunders, just take the combinations I gave you above and give them a try.

P.P.S. Remember that the way the suit and shirt fits you are more important than color matching. This is what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

OK, you got the interview! You know you’re great for this job, you know you’ll do great… All you have to do now is to make THEM see this. All you need are some great fitting clothes to show them you’re serious about your career.

Initially you probably thought it’s best to overdress, so you can impress them. Maybe, an hour later, it occurred to you they won’t like that so you figured you should just go casual.

Let me tell you your thinking is close to what you should be REALLY wearing to an interview. You don’t want to be too dressed up but you don’t want to be super casual either.

Someone once said: If you’ll wear jeans and sneakers to your interview, you’ll GET a “jeans and sneakers” type of job.

I can’t guess what job you’re applying for but I’ll assume it’s one where you need to prove to your employee that you’re serious and reliable.

So let’s take it one step at a time.

The very first thing you’ll want to consider is a suit. The suit is the most formal piece of clothing you can go to an interview. When you wear a suit you’ll communicate that you take good care of yourself, that you only want what’s best and that you’ll do an amazing job for that company.

Of course, not all job interview require suits: if you’re applying for a job at a fast-food restaurant, scroll down below for more dressed-down options.

If you’re applying for a sales or managerial type of job, the suit is your only alternative. After you get the job, you’ll have to wear a suit day in and day out.

The only question remaining is how do you stand out in a suit?

There are a few secrets to that.

1. Wear a suit that matches your skin complexion. I talk a lot about that in my ebook, so that’s a great place to start.

2. Wear a tie that goes with the rest of the suit. It’s all in the details and a man’s tie is the most important detail of a formal outfit. Make sure you do it right.

3. Wear a pocket square. This will definitely make you stand out in a positive way because most guys don’t even KNOW what a pocket square is…

What if i don’t want to wear a suit?

That’s ok, I got you covered. You don’t have to spend $2000 for a suit just for a job interview. However, you STILL have to make a great first impression.

The (only) alternative if you don’t want to wear a suit is… the dress pants.

The dress pants are less formal because they don’t have a matching jacket (by the way, don’t try to improvise a suit by pairing dress pants with a sports jacket). Dress pants do great with sports jackets but only if they CONTRAST.

Depending on how hot it is on the day you have the interview, you may or may not wear a jacket. However, what you do have to wear is a long sleeved dress shirt. Don’t go for a long sleeved one even if it’s hot outside. Short sleeved shirts are not considered formal at all so you shouldn’t wear them at an interview.

Wearing a tie is optional. It depends on the type of job you’re applying for and on how much you want to impress.

In case you didn’t know, here’s a few basic rules to formal outfit matching that you absolutely must know. (if you don’t grab my eBook fast because I have A LOT to tell you about how to look and dress fantastic):

  1. Match your belt with your shoes
  2. Match your socks with your pants
  3. Never wear white socks

Here’s an overview on what you should and shouldn’t wear on your next interview:

Here’s my last tip. For a complete professional look, put a pen in the chest pocket of your shirt. Make sure the pen is placed as close to the middle of your body as possible. That’s where professionals wear them.
