Your Step-by-step Guide On How to Build The Perfect Wardrobe
Here’s what happens. You join the site, you read about all the cool things you can wear to look and feel great. then you decide it’s time to take action.
The next thing you know, you’re in the mall looking at the all the clothes you can choose from… and you have no idea what to buy.
The word “buy” is key here, because you’re trying to “shortcut” the process. You read a few articles and my ebook, then you’re already thinking on what to buy.
One of the style secrets I’ve been writing about is that the outfit is like a set of batteries (us men like technical metaphors, don’t we?). The outfit is more important than any individual piece of clothing just like a set of batteries connected together generate more electricity than if we added the energy produced by each battery separately.
So you can’t buy a piece of clothing just because it looks good on the mannequin in the window. You have to make sure if fits a few clothes you already have in your wardrobe.
The fact is there are a few tiny things that you need to do before you make the purchase. Here’s why…
Knowing a few tweaks will not only save you time (because you’ll know exactly what to buy) but it will really make you looks stylish.
Step 1: assess what you already have
Take a look in your closet to see what you have. You can’t just go into the store and buy whatever draws your attention. You need to pick the outfit you’re willing to build on.
Step 2: decide what you’re going to buy (item X)
Let’s say you have your favorite pair of jeans, your favorite t-shirt and a vest to go with them. You may decide you need a new pair of leather shoes.
All you have to do now is to make it a goal to get those shoes and nothing else. Shoes are your item X.
Step 3: go to the mall dressed in the clothes you’re planning to wear your new purchase with item X
If you’re gonna wear the shoes (mostly) with that pair of jeans, that t-shirt and that vest, you absolutely need to wear them when you go shopping. It’s the only way you can pick the right shoes with them.
Before you leave, just wear any pair of shoes, even if they don’t match the rest of your outfit that well.
Step 4: try as many item Xs as you can
Now that you’re downtown shopping for your new pair of shoes, it’s time to go through every possible store that may have it.
This is not as time consuming as you may think because you’re not browsing. You go in, see if they have anything you like and, if they don’t, you go out.
Even if you find something you perfect, don’t take out your wallet yet. There may be even better deals out there. Spend a little more time checking out the other stores as well.
Step 5: if you find something you’re happy with, buy it
Now that you visited all the stores, it’s time you make the purchase… if you found something you like. If not, resist the temptation to go for something else just because you spent so much time and energy.
If you found what you’re looking for – congratulations. If not, you have several options:
- go back some other time
- ask around the salespersons when they’ll be getting new merchandise and come back then
- shop in another mall or another city
- forget the leather shoes and focus on something similar, like canvas sneakers
That’s it. All you have to do is to repeat this process for the rest of your life. Of course, you still need to know about each individual piece of clothing, to see which ones go well with which. But these 5 steps will give you a tremendous advantage when it comes to building amazing outfits so…
… make sure you stick to them. And let me hear your transformation stories – I’m always excited when I see I literally change people’s appearance overnight.
