It’s not the money in one’s pocket nor the cut of one’s suit which determines if one is a gentleman or not. Rather, a gentleman is defined by the content of his character and manners. However, habitual laziness and instant gratification of past generations (and of course of today’s generation) has eroded the sacredness of being ‘gentlemen’.

It’s not the money in one’s pocket nor the cut of one’s suit which determines if one is a gentleman or not.

Determined that the world should return to the good old ways, we have decided to write this article to share with all men out there the importance of being a gentleman and what one can do in order to become a true gentleman in today’s society.

Before we start, we just want to say that some of the ideas listed below may be pricey but that’s no problem at all as one can simply earn some extra cash by playing profitable games at NoviBet (by the way, gambling is a trait of a gentleman!).

Hold the Door Open

This is one of the most dated etiquette in the world but surprisingly, it still is a must for all gentlemen. The tradition started in the medieval and renaissance times when women wore large skirts and tight-fitting corsets. This attire made it virtually impossible for women to open doors. As such, men would help women by opening the doors for them. Long after fashion had changed, the tradition remained in practice. As a gentleman, you also ought to follow what your great grandfathers did. Worry not about benevolent sexism, sometimes, you just have to do what’s right by you.

Always Arrive on Time

Gentlemen never keep their guests waiting, as such, if you consider yourself to be a gentleman, you have to be punctual at all times. In the old days, being late was considered rudeness. This practice has survived for centuries and even in today’s world, being late is associated with rudeness. Ignore the excuses by the lazy who come up with useless terms like ‘fashionably late’, lateness is lateness and as such, it should not be associated with anyone who considers himself a gentleman.

First Impressions Matter

First impressions matter because they only come once. As such, as a gentleman, you ought to ensure that you make the first impression count. The talk of ‘first impressions matter’ started in medieval England through the ‘handshakes’. Handshakes were a requirement so as to show the other person that you were not armed. Nowadays, this is no longer the case (walking with arms at all times) but handshakes in general and first impressions in particular still matter.

The talk of ‘first impressions matter’ started in medieval England through the ‘handshakes’.

When it comes to creating a good first impression, you ought to follow the following steps: a firm handshake, get the eye contact, a polite, clear and concise introduction.

If you have acquaintances with you, also remember to introduce them. Additionally, remember to dress to impress for any occasion. In social settings, introduce according to gender i.e. introduce a man to a woman and when in a business setting, introduce according to rank i.e. introduce the intern to the Director or the employee to the CEO and so on.

Here at Be Stylish, we cover a wide range of topics from fashion to tech and travel to dating tips. One topic that we’ve discussed in a mixture of ways is casinos, of both the online and brick-and-mortar varieties. Should you play online or visit your local casino? Will internet-based operators take over the traditional venues? What the heck are you actually supposed to wear to a fancy casino? We’ve discussed all of it, but one thing we’ve never covered is casino etiquette. Considering a quick Google search reveals that plenty of people break the rules by doing everything from stealing chips to literally attempting to beat up slot machines, we thought it was about time we did.

1. Turn Your Mobile OFF

It’s true that these days more entertainment venues are allowing you to enter with your mobiles on, but there are still some where talking or playing on your phone is frowned upon. These include cinemas, theatres and, you guessed it, casinos. Not all casinos ban mobile phones or even ask you to turn them off, but it is expected that you will at least put them on silent and avoid sitting at a poker table while on your phone.

One related issue that many of the world’s top casinos do ask you not to do is take selfies, or any photographs of the gambling floor for that matter. Casinos are incredibly secure establishments, which makes sense as there’s usually a lot of money onsite and they don’t want potential baddies to have the upper hand due to photos or videos. So, if you’re visiting a casino maybe leave the selfie stick outside.

2. Don’t Turn Up In Your Pyjamas

One of the most celebrated positives of playing at online casinos is that you can wear anything you like while you play. Pyjamas, tracksuits and slippers are all appropriate for playing at sites which offer free spins on slot machines like Rizk, Thrills and Casumo, heck click here for more places where you could literally be wearing your birthday suit and still continue to play. However, when visiting a brick-and-mortar venue, things are a little different.

Before visiting your casino of choice, do a little research into whether the establishments has a strict dress code. If it does, make an effort to adhere to it or else you could risk being thrown out. If it doesn’t though, simply go for casual-formal; that means a shirt with smart trousers combo, an appropriate dress or a nice top and skirt are sure to be sufficient. As for footwear, the golden rule is to avoid wearing trainers to most high-class places, so bear that in mind.

3. Respect the Staff and Your Fellow Players

There’s no denying that visiting any gaming venue can be frustrating, especially if you are not winning. Anyone who grew up in the 1970s and 80s will know how rage-inducing arcade games could be and anyone with a console has probably been close to chucking their remote through the TV more than once. That said, keeping your composure and respecting staff as well as other players is perhaps the number one rule at all casinos.

Ultimately, when you’re playing a table game at any casino the dealer is always in charge, regardless of how much you wager. When waiting staff bring you your drink and deliver great service as well as your beverage, they deserve to be tipped. Your fellow players expect you to remain composed and polite throughout all of your games, as they are here to have a good time even if you are not.

We know that chances are you already knew all these, in which case this article is more of a reminder than anything, but for anyone who is visiting a casino for the first time it is essential to know these three handy dos and don’ts. Of course, we’re sure we’ve missed some out so if you can think of any please let us know in the comments below.

No matter whether you are heading to the Royal meeting at Ascot or you are going to Kempton on a Tuesday evening, you need to be prepared. A day at the races is always a lot of fun, and the aim is to make it a profitable one too. Here are some tips on how to prepare for race day:

Choose an outfit

For women especially, a day at the races is an opportunity to dress up and wear an outfit they wouldn’t usually. It’s a good idea to check out the dress code & the weather forecast before choosing your outfit. There are different rules for different meetings, and the various enclosures will have their own dress codes too. For example, if you are in the Royal enclosure at Royal Ascot, you will have a number of rules to follow. It’s important to adhere to these; otherwise you may not be permitted entry. Other fixtures, on the other hand, are more laid back. Cheltenham is a prime example of this. It may host the biggest jump festival of the season, but racegoers benefit from more relaxed dress codes.

Read the guide that comes with your tickets

You will usually get a small booklet or leaflet with your ticket. This will explain the terms of your ticket, i.e. places you can and cannot access. Some racecourses allow picnics, which is a great way to save money. If you don’t receive a leaflet with your tickets, simply check out the course website.

Read the form guide

It’s always a good idea to spend some time analysing the races the evening before, so review the horse racing ratings. You will be able to buy a race card at the meeting, but if you have already made your picks, you can save yourself a few pounds. Plus, with only half an hour in between each race, you probably won’t have much time to pick out your horses effectively on the day.

Place some bets online the night or morning before

Another option is to place your bets online the night or morning before the race meet. You will benefit from much better value for money if you do this. Online bookmakers also offer various promotions and deals for you to take advantage of.

Read some racing blogs

Last but not least, read some racing blogs before your day at the races. There are plenty of options.

You can read blog posts on what to expect from the race course itself, as well as some tips on how the course impacts the race.

For example, whether there is draw bias, or whether the way the course turns has an impact on certain horses. You should also look at betting blogs, like a matched betting blog. This will provide you with some top tips on how to guarantee a profit.

So, there you have it; some top tops on how to prepare for a day at the races. Follow the advice mentioned above and you will have nothing to worry about.

Being a well dressed man means nothing without manners. Sure, most of the times you go out with friends in bars and clubs…but there are occasions when you have to deal with a fancy restaurant.

A fancy dinner isn’t some sort of a test on your dining etiquette that you must pass. Think of it as a chance to show of some of the skillthat I’m going to teach you right now.

Before we begin, I have one think to ask you. And you must give you my word that you’ll do as I ask.

When you’re at that dinner with those important people or with that amazing uptown girl…don’t act too formal. Rather, be yourself and apply my dining etiquette tips as if they’re second nature to you.

Being in formal encounters doesn’t mean that you have to act like you just teleported yourself from the 16th century. Be cool and act cool.

All right, let’s get started with the most important dining etiquette tips you need to survive during a meal at a restaurant.

1. The big napkin that sits on your chair when you arrive (you may also find it on the table or in the wine glass) goes on your lap.

Most people are clueless as to what to do with that napking. They usually fold it and put it somewhere where it won’t bother them. At the end of the meal they might use it to wipe their mouth.

Wroong!

You should take the napkin and place it on your lap before you start eating. If you haven’t ordered yet, it’s ok to keep it on the table.

Caveat: you don’t have to completely unfold it when you use it… just enough to cover your lap.

Another caveat: never tuck your napkin inside your shirt’s collar.

When you excuse yourself from the table, fold back the napkin (once) and place it on the table.

When you finish eating, either place the napkin on the left or,if the plates have been cleared from the table, in the center.

2. Posture

Keep your back straight and don’t stretch your feet in other’s people personal space.
Never keep your elbows on the table. I know it feels like you don’t have where to put your hands but keep in mind that this rule right here is known by A LOT of people. It’s widespread and if you don’t follow it… you get the idea.

You can hold your arms on your knees or you can hold them on the table but only about half of your forearm.

3. Never blow your nose at the dinner table. Period.

4. Wait until everyone at the table is served before starting to eat

This is common sense and I’m sure you’re already doing it. The only exception to this rule is if you order 2 courses and others only one. You may go ahead and eat the first course alone and eat the second course along with everyone else.

5. Always eat with your fork and knife at the same time. The fork goes on the left, the knife in your right arm. If this is something you’re uncomfortable with, practice at home until you get it.

6. Never bite from your bread, use your hands to break the bread into pieces before eating it.

7. Never talk with your mouth full. I cannot stress this enough. If you want to know how bad this looks, just wait until you catch someone in action.

8. When drinking wine, never hold the glass from the cup. This will warm the wine and that’s why it’s considered bad manners. Hold the glass from its stem (the long thin part that connects the foot from the cup).

9. You can share food with other at the table for tasting purposes. This is OK. However, you should ask for an additional plate and another fork and knife to divide the food.

10. While eating, you can rest the knife and the fork on each of the sides of the plate. But don’t leave them with one side on the plate and one on the table. Once you start eating, your utensils should never touch the table again.

When you’re done eating, you should place them one next to the other on the plate, with one end in the center of the plate and the other at the side. This will signal the waiter that you’re done eating and that he can remove the plate.

11. It’s ok to leave food on the plate, contrary to what you mother might have told you. What’s not ok is to leave the plate “too clean”,as if you haven’t eaten in days. 🙂
