Ed Westwick (or, as you may know him, Chuck Bass from the TV series Gossip Girl) is an English actor and musician born in Stevenage Hertfordshire, UK in 1987.

That’s it with the facts, I’m sure you’re more interested in his photos than his performances in Gossip Girl, right?

OK, here we go.

The first photo shows Mr. Westwick wearing an awesome camel coat, a charcoal gray suit, dark brown shoes and black gloves. A striped shirt and a patterned dark tie complete his outfit.

Did you spot which rule he broke in this outfit? He’s wearing black gloves with brown shoes. It’s usually not a good idea to wear black and brown in the same outfit, unless you can make it look good. Otherwise, you’ll be just like every other guy who’s randomly throwing black and blue on him.

A stylish outfit overall, nevertheless.

You may be wondering how can those two patterns work together? They seem to have nothing in common.

That may be true but the thing that binds the shirt and tie together is actually color. They’re both black.

Since they already have that in common, Ed (or, rather, GQ) decided to put together 2 totally different patterns… and it worked!

This next outfit has a lot of color in it – I’m not sure you’re willing to wear it. Nevertheless, it teaches a valuable lesson on how purple, yellow and white work well together.

If you want you can start with navy blue or black, the add just a touch of yellow and purple. This way you’ll be on the safe side, yet still wear a stylish color combination.

Let’s take a look at the next one. Notice anything strange?

Yep – Ed is taking things one step further (as you should too!) and he’s wearing 2 (that’s “two”) shirts at once!

This is very rare and you need some balls to do it. Yet Ed does a wonderful job (and I’m sure that his fame also helps him to get away with it).

If there’s one thing you should be careful with when wearing a plaid suit, it’s fit. Such suits are synonymous with older men so you have to do your best to erase that vibe. A slim fit plaid suit is 10 times better than one with a regular fit.

I don’t really like wearing red and pink in large quantities, yet Ed looks pretty darn good in this attire:

I think one of the funniest stories I ever head about Johnny was when this school girl wrote to “Jack Sparrow” (the name of the character he plays in Pirates of the Caribbean).

She wrote to him that she and her colleagues got sick of their teachers and that they’re planning to start a mutiny. Just like pirates, who rebel against taxes social norms. At the end of the letter, she (obviously) wrote down her school where she was studying.

You’ll never guess what happened. Jack Sparrow (or Johnny Depp, cause they’re the same thing) decided to pay her a visit… while wearing the full costume of the most famous pirate character in the world.

How cool is that?

Well, I’m not going to post any pictures of that costume… I’m sure you already know it. Instead, I’ll show you some of the hottest outfits Johnny has ever worn… and comment them from a style perspective.

By the end of this article, you’ll not only think he’s a great movie star but also that he dresses really really well.

His unique style…

Johnny Depp chooses a really relaxed casual look. He wears a lot of t-shirts but compensates with many accessories.

Let the show begin!

Outfit #1: brown t-shirt, grey hat

We’re starting off with this apparently simple outfit… if you don’t count the tattoo and the accessories, that is.

The t-shirt isn’t much and I’m sure you could get one yourself right now.

But what about the hat? Would you wear one? Mixing black and dark-brown isn’t such a great idea but mixing GREY an brown can make you look damn hot!

And what about the wrist watch? The brown leather strap matches the t-shirt and gives him that “I’m a busy man” look, along with the glasses.

But that “good guy” look is quickly toned down by the tattoos on both his arm and the rest of the accessories.

The interesting thing about this is that no single item of clothing stands out – yet the overall look is amazing.

Outfit #2: Johnny in a brown leather jacket and wearing a green scarf

I’m sorry I don’t have the full attire but, even so, we have a lot to learn about matching colors from this second outfit.

Breakdown: light-brown jacket, green scarf, grey hat and glasses with purple lens. Don’t forget the 2 rings on his right hand.

The trio brown-green-purple works well together but it all depends on the quantity. If you’re afraid you’ll screw up, just finish the outfit with greys (grey chinos, grey shoes, a light-grey t-shirt etc.)

Neutral colors are your lifeguard when you’re playing around with colors.

Outfit #3: lots and lots of bracelets

Well, you don’t have to wear them if you don’t like them. The thing is, once you’ll reach a certain point in your style evolution, you’ll begin to love certain clothes and accessories… and there’s no doubt Johnny Depp is in love with bracelets.

Outfit #1

Let’s start with my absolute favorite: a picture of Matt wearing a tie clip, a hat and a pocket square.

What I love most about this outfit is that, because the contrast is not very strong, the three classic accessories are getting all the attention.

Here’s what I mean. If Matt was wearing a shirt in a bold color (such as yellow or green) with a pattern (such as vertical stripes or checks) and a colored pocket square… it would have been too much for him.

Obviously, for a TV character, he couldn’t have distracted the viewer’s attention from the screenplay by wearing outfits that are too bold but…

… it’s up to YOU and only you to decide how much you want to stand out. Just make sure before you do that, that the FIT is perfect. If you’re wearing outfits that aren’t your size, the last thing you want is to have everyone’s eyes on you.

Before we move on to the next outfit, there is one style rule that Matt didn’t follow in this photo. Did you spot it?

It’s the shirt’s cuff, of course! It should be spotted from beneath the suit jacket. If this is your case as well, this means that either the shirt’s sleeves are too short, that the suit jacket is too long or both.

Outfit #2

While this outfit isn’t as bold as the previous one, you can see in action a very old formal style rule: if you’re wearing a white shirt, the pocket square should be white as well.

But that’s not all. notice how the dark-gray suit has some black on it. This black matches perfectly with the silk tie. This sort of match can be hard to achieve because it’s hard to find suits like these.

Outfit #3

It was hard for me to find a casual outfit of Matt but, nevertheless, here it is.

Truth be told, I’m a little disappointed because of the lack of color but I DO like the fedora and the glasses. They give him a mysterious air which you can have as well if you’re willing to try this combination.

For this, I’ve chosen Italian actor Raoul Bova.

Outside of his native Italy, Raoul Bova fits that status perfectly. He is the star of many Italian box office blockbusters like Comincio Tutto Per Caso and La Finestra Di Fronte. We, the rest of the world know him best  as Marcello from Under The Tuscan Sun, or Sebastian De Rosa, the archaeologist from Alien vs. Predator.

So what are his secrets? First of all, he doesn’t like to trade tradition for passing fashion trends. Bova wears bespoke suits, not tight ones. The cut is fuller than you might expect,but still it clings close enough to compliment his body frame . Details like peak lapels appear classic yet new again, diminishing the need for any other accouterments. The color of choice is the classic black.

When he is less formal, his color of choice is white, which is a wise decision, considering his darker skin complexion. The Mediterranean gene pool surely helped him a lot.
