The Difference Between Fashion and Style for Men

Hey
I know I’m usually posting about specific advice on what to wear and what not to wear but…
I realized there’s a BIIIG point guys are missing when it comes to style. And that point is…

They mix style with fashion!

Does anyone have a dictionary in the house?

Seriously now, it’s a big confusion guys make. Let me tell you what that difference is and why it’s so important.

Fashion is an industry and it’s all about changing trends. Whenever I think about fashion I think about dressy fat-cats who make up some new collection every year to make people buy over and over again.

How do they do that?

They make people feel bad about the way they look. They make them feel bad about not being fashionable.

You’re wearing last year’s color? You need to evolve, man!

This shirt is from last year’s collection? Stop wearing it! haven’t you see the new designs? Denim is back in fashion, man!

And on and on.

This is how the industry works. All in all, they don’t care what you look like in those clothes. All it matter is that you buy.

Let em ask you a critical question: have you ever bought something from the latest trends, spent a fortune then felt uncomfortable wearing it? I know I have.

But the weird thing was I tried to find reasons why it was a good choice.

Reasons like:

Oh, this is what everyone else is wearing!

or

Everyone else pays 50% more to get this! I got a very good deal.

The fact of the matter was, these were all irrational reasons. I didn’t want to admit to myself the fact that I screwed up when I bought the damn thing.

If you buy what fashion dictates is not only expensive but you’ll end up looking like everyone else. Not a good deal, right?

OK, now that you know to take any fashion advice with a grain of salt, let’s talk a little about what style is.

Style is all about YOU. About looking and feeling better about yourself.

It’s about wearing clothes that flatter you instead of clothes that are trendy this year.

It’s about wearing clothes that will still be accepted 2, 3 or even 4 years from now.

It’s about mixing and matching color and patterns.

It’s about taking into consideration your body’s proportions, your skin and hair tone and a dozen other factors. Take them into account and you will look like a million dollars.

Bear in mind this key fact: fashion and style are different in their essence. They are both cool. They are both interesting.

But modeling a celebrity like Ashton Kutcher, Johnny Depp or David Beckham is 1000x better than wearing what male models do on the catwalk. (When they’re not on the catwalk, they all wear totally different clothes I assure you).

The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll form your eye to pick the right clothes and colors in an instant. Pretty soon, people will want to know YOUR secrets about how you developed your own style.
