Hey,
George here.

Since I’m getting at least 2-3 questions a day about style from guys all around the world, I don’t want all that knowledge to go down the drain. This page is a style entry-point for all your questions, answered one by one.

I’ve learned to match colors better and the use of accessories to bring a little more style to plain outfits.

If you have any question at all related to style, post a comment here and I’ll give you a straight-to-the point answer.

Why should you listen to me?

Ever since 2009 I’ve been actively involved in changing the personal image of guys around the world. I’ve…

  • done hundreds of consultations by e-mail, phone and face-to-face
  • read all the books on men’s style and fashion
  • been involved in deep discussions with other image consultants

I tried dozens of clothing combinations and haircuts, I tested lots of men’s products and found my own style. I helped other men find their own style and I think I can help you as well.

People I haven’t seen in years have been pleasantly surprised by the way I dress.

I understand if you’re a bit skeptical about what style can do for you. I also understand that you might be a little afraid to make a fool of yourself if you try some stylish clothes.

This is why I’m giving you my full support. I want you to see the initial results of style… after you can judge for yourself if this is for you or not.

Can you talk about layering and give some examples. Since the winter season is coming up?

George September 13, 2010 - 9:36 am

Hi Adale,
Sure. In fact I should make a whole article about this but, since this is the Q&A section… I’ll keep it short.

“Layering” is basically wearing several layers of clothes. You wear them one on top pf the other, that’s why they’re called layers.

Layering works in colder periods of year, because the extra layers will keep you warm. In fact, two thin layers of clothes can keep you warmer than one single layer of a thicker cloth.

Layering should be done in casual situations. Here’re some of it’s “ingredients”:

– a V-neck shirt
– a cardigan
– a vest
– a t-shirt
– a scarf
– a shirt
– a sports jacket or blazer
etc.

There’s one rule that needs to be followed here: thinner layers go at the bottom. Shirts and t-shirts are often the innermost layer while blazers and cardigans are at the top.

Here’s a basic example of layering, composed of a t-shirt, a sports jacket and a scarf:

Hi George,

right now I’m thinking about buying some stylish clothes for winter. During summer/autumn I have success with shirts (like those http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/shirts/are-mens-military-shirts-stylish) or combination of a t-shirt and a vest. It works perfectly for me, especially concerning ladies. What would you recommend for colder weather? Do you have some advice for sweathers or something?

George October 2, 2010 - 10:51 pm

Jan,
I haven’t seen how your shirts look like but if you have some dress shirts, you can wear them with a V-neck sweater or a vest. This will keep you warm and you’ll do layering and be even more stylish.

Another thing for colder weather that I like to wear is a scarf.

hi, im 5ft 6inches with an ectomorph body type, but athletic as i visit the gym. i look red indian, with light oilish coloured skin and black straight hair, which i keep well trimmed and neat always.
could you help me on advising what kind of clothes and style would suit me most, with my long hair and red indian (werewolves from twilight movie) looks. My friends say i look like the werewolf guys from the Twilight film. i like looking neat and sharp, but ensuring that my clothes fit me well. so are there anything you can add to it? i really love wearing denim bottoms.

PS: YOU ARE HELPING MORE AND MORE OF US COME OUT FROM THE DARK AND INTO THE LIGHT WITH YOUR EVER HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY TIPS. I WISH I HAD CAME ACROSS YOUR SITE SOONER!!! THANKYOU SOOOOOOO MUCH…

George October 22, 2010 - 9:37 am

Hey Donnie,

First of all, thanks for all the kind words!

Second, the thing you want to do is wear vertical stripes to make yourself look taller. Think striped shirts, slim ties (if that’s your style) or scarves.

If you have a light skin complexion, try wearing darker colors to make a contrast.

If you already know how to make your clothes fit you, the next steps for you are:
– to wear more color and color-match your outfit
– to wear accessories (plenty of choices here, depends on what you like).

Hello,

In “3 Simple Men Casual Outfits”, you recommend red sneakers. Quick question: What color is the belt? Do you follow the guideline “match belt to shoes”?

George December 3, 2010 - 2:37 am

Hi Dave,

In casual situations you don’t need to keep follow this rule. It’s a good idea if the outfit is very simple because it helps make a fashion statement.

For red sneakers you have plenty of options. What’s important is that the entire outfit looks good.

In the outfit with the red sneakers, here’s what I would choose for a belt:

1. no belt at all (to keep the focus on the sneakers)
2. a red belt (exactly the same nuance as the sneakers)
3. A belt with white and red stripes on it (because the sneakers also have white)
4. A belt that’s the same color as either the t-shirt or the jeans, again, to let it blend in and keep the focus on the sneakers.

hi george,

first of all thanx… its been great reading all your articles… been incredibly helpful

i’ve got a wedding to attend next month and have decided to wear a gray striped suit with me but am confused about which shirt and tie to team it up with. a plain white shirt with a pink tie seems good but more business-like. could you suggest something else?

i’m 5ft 9in, am thin with normal complexion

George December 15, 2010 - 10:50 pm

Hi Avnesh and thanks for reading all the articles!

I’m not really clear, are you saying you WANT something more business-like than a white shirt/pink tie or that this combination IS to business-like?

Since the tie IS pink I’ll assume you want something less playful.

In fact, let me give you a few possible combinations, ranking them from serious to playful, top to bottom. This way you can choose whichever you want or maybe you’ll come up with even better ideas.

So, a gray suit with…

1. A white shirt and a black uni tie (uni = no pattern)
2. A white shirt and a tie with pattern that contains black, gray and white.
3. Cream shirt with black tie.
4. White shirt with a pink tie.
5. Royal blue shirt with yellow tie

Since the suit is striped, you have to be careful if you choose a striped shirt and a tie with pattern.. Too many stripes.

Maybe you can post a pic of your suit or a link to a similar suit on the Internet? The shade of gray is also very important.

I would go for the 3rd one. The first two I would wear in the club on a night out. The 3rd one works in both situations.

2) Go for something in netural colors, nothing that stands out too much.

what to wear with Pink LOUIS PHILLIPE shirt?
what to wear with White And BLue VAN HEUSEN Shirt?
what to wear with Navy BLue Shirt?

Robert January 24, 2011 - 10:25 pm

Hey George,

I really like your e-books, but I have a question regarding the ‘no more than 3 colors’ rule: Does it apply to shades as well?

Say that I’m wearing dark blue jeans and a light blue scarf does that count as 2 colors. That would leave only one color left for me, correct?

Or can you wear 2 shades of a single color with 2 other colors?

If it’s winter, boots are great. Try desert boots.

Hi Amir,
It’s definitely not suede. This is actually more formal than regular leather, so it takes the outfit more towards casual. The description says it’s leather but I wouldn’t’ wear this jacket over a suit, blazer or sports jacket.

George January 24, 2011 - 10:37 pm

Brands are less important in this case so let’s focus on the color aspect.

If your dad is 40, the pink is probably the furthest he wants to go with color matching. I would pair it with some black dress pants and a tie that has some combination of black, blue and small amounts of pink on it.

The white and blue shirt.. have him try it with a pair or black or navy blue pants and a tie that has a combination of black, white and blue on it (not necessarily all 3 colors at once).

The navy blue shirt: black pants, white and blue tie for instance. He can also go for a tie that has red and blue on it.

George January 24, 2011 - 10:41 pm

Thanks Robert.

Shades should count as one color. Otherwise, like you noticed, you’re left with only one color.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you can wear 3 bold colors, that will over do it (say red, green and yellow – yuck!).

But if you have dark blue jeans and a light blue scarf, then you can wear a brown t-shirt, white sneakers and a white canvas belt. We have blue, brown and white, that’s 3 colors (if we count white to be a color too – since it’s actually a “non-color”).

Hope that helps.

I find cool grey slacks really hard to match with. Unless I’m wearing a solid black shirt (in which case obviously I’d wear black shoes/belt) I sometimes have a hard time deciding how to wear them. How do you match cool grey slacks? Say I was wearing a pink shirt with them? Or navy? What color shoes/belt would I wear?

Hi Ben,

What I’ve been using for a few years to remove chest hair and hair on my legs is a trimming machine. It does the job pretty good, it doesn’t involve any pain and it leaves a little hair, which I like.

I’ve never used any creams but, as men, I don’t really think we need them. My last two GFs said they didn’t like guys who shaved their legs and it took me a while to convince them that I was merely trimming. 🙂

Hi.
Unfortunately I’ve never been to India so I can’t recommend any good places to buy suits. If you have the time find a good tailor and get yourself a nice bespoke suit.

Grey is a neutral color so it works with most colors. You can wear them with shirts in any color you want: blue, yellow, pink, green, blue etc.

You can try brown shoes and a brown belt but black is also good. Consider the color of your shirt as well before choosing the shoes.

Ben :

Well, if you’re wearing a suit, and you decided to go for white shoes, then yes, you should wear a white belt. I’m guessing the suit is also white in this case.

For blue shoes… are you talking about navy blue? Most shoes are either black or brown, while blue is considered more… exotic. yes, you should match them with a belt of the same color.

But if by shoes you men converse shoes or boat shoes, then, in that case you’re talking casual outfits, in that case, do you don’t have to do any matching.

Formal attire: you MUST match shoes with belt
Casual attire: it’s OPTIONAL to match belt with shoes.

Vince :

Ben:

Both black and brown will go well with rose brown.

Now it depends on the rest of your outfits. Think of the coolest outfit you’re planning to wear your watch with. Maybe it’s that cool new suit.. or that sports jacket.

If you’re wearing other golden accessories, I’d go for the brown strap. For instance you could wear your brown leather strap on your left hand, a brown leather bracelet on your right hand.

But let’s say you’re wearing a cool men’s ring. In this case a black or silver strap would work better.

The rule is: match gold with yellow and silver with black.

If you’re not going to wear any other accessories, you should just worry about matching your watch with your clothes. How you do that is up to you, there are plenty of ways and you need a trained eye for this (not that hard if you’re serious about your style and read all the articles on this blog).

Ideally, of course, I’d buy both straps and get a watch that allows me to swap them as I please.

Good luck! 😉

Great choice, Al!

You can your new brogue shoes with anything, from suits to jeans. I wouldn’t wear them with shorts, even as stylish as those from Ralph Lauren, though.

A pair of simple blue jeans will work very well with brown brogues. You can finish the outfit with either a dress shirt or a polo shirt.

If you’re wondering what suit colors go well with your shoes, the answer is blue and gray. Just make sure you get a matching brown belt.

Hi,

A few quick questions. I’m trying to reinvent myself after a relationship and would like some tips. I’m going for more of the PUA peacocky style (no fuzzy purple vests or top hats), but was really impressed by you recent article on peacocking. I’ve linked my Facebook, take a look at my pictures and let me know what you think. I’m really digging the guy’s look with the white belt and white glasses from the peacocking article).

P.S. My hair is very thick so I keep it shaved/faded with a nice crisp edge up. Is there anything else I can do or should I stick with this? How do you style thick, coarse hair?

Estevan April 6, 2011 - 9:11 am

…that is, what you think I could do differently from my pictures.

George April 19, 2011 - 10:16 am

Hi Estevan,

I took a look at your photos. I must say in some of them you look pretty cool.

One thing you could do is start wearing patterns (on both casual and formal outfits). They’ll bring a little more flavor.

Another tip I can give you is to go for lighter colors (especially since you like peacocking and you’re not afraid to stand out). try, for instance, a pair of light-colored khakis.

Also, have you thought about a sports jacket?

About the hair: I have the same type of hair and have used L’Oreal Liss Ultime shampoo to soften it. It doesn’t do wonders but it softens it a little.

Also, consider using a hair plate.

Estevan April 29, 2011 - 10:49 pm

Thanks for the feedback!

Be careful with it as it can ruin your hair, long term or short term if you misuse it.

i have mayday coming up. This is a very special event for my 8th grade where we go to mass with the moms and then out for lunch. I was thinking of wearing a gray suit with white pinstripes, a white button up under, a patterned orange tie with a plain orange pocket square, and black shoes with black belt. does this go together well? do you have any improvements?

James B. May 3, 2011 - 7:34 am

Hey,

This is a question about your recent report you sent to me. The report was entitled Destroy the Geek.

I was reading your report, and agree with most of it. (Especially the hair, fit, glasses, etc.)

But as I read the report, I noticed a slight ambiguity in your writing. Look at Step 4 on page 9. If you look at the bottom paragraphs on that page, there is wording which is ambiguous. It says “But seriously, always go for shoes that have a pointy toecap and a slim sole.”

Revise that above sentence, and take a closer look at the words “slim sole.” For me, I am confused by those words. What do you mean by “slim sole”? Does “slim sole” mean that the width of the shoe is narrow? Or, alternatively, does “slim sole” mean that the sole of the shoe is thin, so your feet are close to the ground?

Also, I want to ask another question. In one of your articles, entitled “The Definitive Style Guide For Short Men,” you have recommended shoe styles for short men. You said that shoes which have “thicker soles” are better for short men, because thick soles lifts them up.

But I disagree with that statement. To my knowledge, thick soled shoes do not look good on men. In my mind, thick-soled shoes appear somewhat feminine, just like how I see platform shoes as feminine. Won’t thick soled shoes look bad on men? To me, whenever I imagine a man wearing thick soled shoes, I automatically associate him as effeminate.

But for a short man, thick soled shoes might work under certain situations. So I am not eliminating the possibility that thicker soled shoes would work for some men. I am open-minded in men’s style.

Wear an accessory that has the same green that your eyes have. Maybe a tie, a bow-tie. You can also wear a t-shirt that has some picture on it with green, or a striped shirt with green stripes.

Brown shoes and a brown sports jacket will also work great on you. Let me know how this goes.

Ben May 9, 2011 - 7:39 am

Hey George,
I’ve got three questions for ya. First of all, I’m a young(20) man with blue eyes, a light skin complexion, and dark blond hair. I have been trying to find more color combinations that work with my complexion, because so far I have just relied on blue and black, since I know they work for me and I don’t know where to start looking for any other combinations that will look good on me. Any suggestions?

Second, my hair has been the one aspect of my style that has never been quite ‘up to par’ with the rest of me. I have always been a little lost with my hair for a multitude of reasons. I have a somewhat half-square-half-heart shaped face, and a large forehead. The biggest trouble for me becomes that I get trapped between keeping my hair long enough to cover my forehead, and keeping it short enough that it doesn’t get disheveled by wind, since it is so thin. Any ideas?(sorry if that was vague)

And finally, I was tipped off to espadrilles by one of your articles and looked them up, and I’m in love. I found a pair that sparked my interest, especially color-wise, and I would like your input on them.
Link: http://www.espadrillestore.com/traditional-espadrilles-red/
I already have black, blue, and other dark colored shoes, so I figured I could use a pair of red espadrilles or other bright color with dark laces to create some nice contrast and maybe to wear with a pair of dark jeans. Input?

Thank you so much, sorry to ask so many questions haha.

PS: Your website has been an INCREDIBLE help to me. Your style tips have worked WONDERS for me, I find that this is a great place to find ideas for new outfits, to improve old ones, or just to gain inspirations for new clothing styles that I otherwise wouldn’t have the confidence to try. Thanks.

Hi Connor,

Firstly, apologies for the late reply.

You can pair khaki pants with dark brown. War dark brown shoes, a brown belt and a dark blue shirt or polo. You can try green if you want – just make sure it’s dark green or olive green.

Connor Griffin :

i have mayday coming up.

Sorry for not answering this on time. You coudl make sure either the tie has some white on it to match the shirt and the pinstripe pattern.

Also, the pocket square should be white. It’s a style rule: when wearing a suit with a solid white shirt, the pocket square must be solid white as well.

James B. :

Hi James,

Sorry for the ambiguity. The sole of the shoe should be thin (not the width of the shoe).

Regarding your second question about shoes with thick soles:

Those types of shoes can maie you look even 4-5 inches taller, which is quite a difference. The shoe companies have managed to camouflage the sole’s thickness.

Take a look at the picture below:

I never wore such shoes but they look like they’re worth a try. If I’ll ever see a pair in one of the shoe stores I frequent, I’ll make sure to try them on and see how they feel.

I’m glad to hear you’re open minded about men’s style, that’s what BeStylish.org is all about!

Hi, I have a problem: I’m balding. What do you suggest in order to look good and stylish? I’m a latino guy in a very good shape, but I’m 5’6” and have a round face.

thanks for the advise.

Hi Miguel,

Try to keep your hair trimmed as much as possible so you don’t draw attention to it. An even better solution is to shave your head.

Once you do that, go ahead and wear some stylish caps and hats such as an ascot cap…

… or a fedora…

… or a panama hat…

Chukka boots are casual in essence, so, while you can wear them with dress shirts, please don’t wear them at formal events. When attending weddings, formal dinners, etc. go for a pair of formal boots.

Hi George,

Hi Glenn,

I did hear a while back about a style icon doing this. But I don’t remember who he was, nor can I find pictures.

It’s a bold move so this might not be for everyone. But you can try it if you want. A guy named Jack Taylor (from the crew of the TV show “Beverly Hills”) would wear his ties like scarves. I guess you can get creative when it comes to slim ties, but be prepared for criticism.

I wouldn’t wear it unless I wore a coat. That way, whether the shirt is tucked or not won’t really matter. Plus, most of the tie will be hidden anyway behind the coat.

I wouldn’t wear a tie and a scarf at the same time to make a fashion statement.

Hi Alfie,
Congrats for starting jogging – I do it ALL the time and it’s really healthy!

Regarding the shorts versus jogging pants issues, it all depends to the temperature outside and your thermal comfort. You can wear either one as long as you’re not too hot or too cold in them.

As far as colors are concerned, you can go for a white and blue or a white and red combination. This way you’ll stand out more. Or, you can go for a full-white outfit. However, when you’re jogging in the winter, make sure you don’t wear too much white, though; lighter colors in the spring/summer, darker colors in the autumn/winter.

Hi Jay,
I’m glad you’re enjoying my site.

If you have darker skin, go for lighter colors, such as white, light blue and pale colors (pale yellow, pale pink etc.).

To find pants that fit you, get larger pants, then take them to the tailor to have them adjusted. Make sure all the clothes you wear will fit just right, not too tight yet not too lose either.

Hi Joel,

Yes, royal blue and black go well together:

Regarding the pocket square: royal blue is ok but you can go even further. A black and blue pocket square, for instance.

There are plenty of other things you can do, such as add a little bit of white to the pocket square. Maybe royal blue with white dots?

Hi Yuri,

I wouldn’t recommend online stored because the clothes you order might not fit you. I have a friend who recently bought some sneakers online and, even though he tried the exact same model in stores, the ones he received were a little too big.

I would only buy accessories online, the rest of the clothes… I only buy exactly the clothing items that I’m trying on.

Colors.. read around the site, see what I recommend… Also, read about color matching and the types of clothing items that are considered stylish (boat shoes, moccasins, rolled-up shirts chinos etc.)

About your last part,
I’m not really a self-develop coach but I did notice you keep your head and neck too low. 🙂

Hi Yash,

Thank you for the kind words.

Don’t worry too much about looking odd in slim-fit. I think you’re just too much used to larger clothes. Trust, me you’ll look all right. And you don’t have to get pants that are TOO tight, somewhere between slim-fit and regular fit will do.

Also, have you though about wearing chino pants as an alternative to jeans?

Hi, first off I just wanted to say I LOVE your site. Lots of helpful info..

Few questions..

1) It seems to me that matching shoes with a shirt or belt looks really good for casual situations like school.. my only problem is that this would require me to buy 5+ pairs of shoes.. which is obviously expensive. Is it really important to match the shoes? If I don’t match the shoes with my outfit, what color shoes should I buy in order to work universally for multiple outfits. Also, what should I use to help color match in-place of the non-matching shoes?

2) I have these REALLY nice casual sneakers, they have a combination of shiny black and non-shiny black, and work well for parties and casual situations. Would it look good if I wore a white dress shirt, a shiny lightly patterned shiny black tie, really deep/dark blue slim (not skinny)jeans, and a leather black belt along with these shoes. What are some other combinations I can do? I have this awesome slightly shiny (because it’s not 100% cotton) grey shirt similar but even better than this

http://0.tqn.com/d/teenfashion/1/0/Q/1/-/-/grey142.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS384_V38223169_.jpg

Oh, I’m 5’7″ Indian with medium brown skin, not really dark or light. And I live in California so weather is generally not a concern 🙂

Thanks!

Hi Nishanth,

First of all, thanks!

1) You can just match the shoes with your belt. Since this is a school uniform, I take it that you need to wear leather shoes. Just go for either black or brown. Brown is great by the way.

TO color match them, just stick to matching them with your belt. No need to match them with your shirts.

2) Shiny is not all that stylish, you’re better off without the shiny tie. But it’s not that bad either if you keep the shoes.

Also, black and navy blue don’t really work together. Yes, most people won’t notice but you’re better off with black pants. Now, what I would do is add something extra to such an outfit. Perhaps you could get a red tie instead of the shiny black one?

Also, you could get a black vest and add a pocket square to it (make sure the vest allows for one).

If the tie is not that shiny as you say, you can keep it, though – it’s not that big of a problem.

I’m not sure about the pic: is the shirt the one that you have or you have the tie as well?

Hi Jason,

I hope my answer finds you in time.

First off, I would wear brown shoes and belt with a grey suit. It’s not wrong to go for black but brown is more stylish. You can stick with black if you already purchased your shoes, though.

Yes, orange will look good, a darker shade that is. You need to make a good contrast with your light-gray suit.

The tie can repeat the color from the shirt, the suit, both or it can have completely different colors.

To tuck or not to tuck? this is the problem!

Hi George!

First of all I should say you are amazing! I just found you by googling and you’ve helped me a lot already.

My question is on which occasions and styles it’s better to tuck in my shirt and on which it’s not.

I’m 5’7″ (not too tall) and average body. I normally feel better when I tuck in my shirt as i feel I look taller (i’m not sure it’s actually true though)but at the same time I don’t want to look nerdy (I wear glasses too)and/or out of style.

I appreciate your comment on that.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you mean by a canvas. As far as colors are concerned, you should get your eye trained for the best color combinations. Red and blue isn’t all that great, there are better ones out there. try orange and black, orange and gray, red and gray, blue and orange, dark orange and dark green and so on.

Hi Kevin,

I’m really glad this blog is helping you. Lucky I was online when your question popped on my screen.

Shirt tucking is more stylish than not tucking so feel free to do it. I always do it.

I do wear some shirts untucked sometimes, but only when I get a feel that it will look good.

I really like them, but would it be a faux pas to get them in red? I think they look nice in red, but I’m not sure how I would pull off scarlet red shoes. Do you have any suggestions as to how to go about wearing red shoes, if at all?

Could you write an article about how to wear glasses (medical)? I mean color and matching, style, brand, etc. For some people like me they’re a mandatory part of our outfit and I want them to be advantageous not the other way around!

Thank you! I appreciate it.

Hi Mike,

This sounds like an important event for you. Instead of answering your question and just tell you to go for a *black tie* attire, I decided to write an entire article about it. You can find it here – I go really in depth about black tie:

http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/formal-wear/the-black-tie-dress-code-for-men

About the budget – this is all about you putting time and effort to find the best prices. Just make sure you get the highest quality – try to stay away from polyester if you can. The more you search for each of the individual pieces of the black tie, the higher the chances that you’ll find some amazing deals.

Hello George!

I’ve read your article about the different kinds of shoes, but I was surprised that Skate Shoes were gone from that article, because skate shoes are worn by many people especially to generate the “bad boy” avatar. (not for skateboarding at all).

I wanted to know what’s your opinion about this kind of shoes, because I thought seriously about buying a pair , something like this

http://www.simplysneakers.com/wp-content/gallery/nike-sb-dunks-release-dates/nike-sb-dunk-release-date-6.jpg

There is a huge variety of skate shoes (you can google pictures and see).

I like to wear sport shoes for casual outfits, but I want some semi-formal shoes and thought that skate shoes would look good, or in your opinion I better get a pair of sneakers ??

Sorry for the long message!

Thanks !!

Hi George.

As I’m finishing High School this season the Prom Night is getting closer rapidly.
For nearly 2 years i’ve been hitting on the same girl, with no luck. However i eventually asked her to be my date for prom night, and in the end i had a not to convincing yes.

So the time has come. I want to prove to her that she took the right decision when she accepted my offer. And in the end i want to lay her the fuck down once and for all.

I got the car set and i got the suit set. What i would like from you is a few tips and tricks on how to impress her silky underwear off.

A few details about me and the suit.

Tall dark browned guy with normal skin color, however i will return from holiday in a few weeks with a slightly better tan.

The suit: Navy blue Giorgio Armani, Slim suit. 2 Buttoned

What would be the best to compliment me and the suit, and should i choose bow tie or regular tie?

Looking forward to hear from you!

Kind regards

Hello,
I have a question that I want to ask you. What do you think if I wear a black vest with matching pants, a white shirt and a gray/black striped/shiny tie for my prom?
Any advices?

Peter Tuborgh October 20, 2011 - 9:51 pm

I would definetly wear a suit for prom. And if you are very fancy, go with a colorful tie that matches the dress of your date. Or go with Black suit, white shirt, and Slim shiny black tie. Looks very classy and original. However i wouldn’t suggest if you are very very light skin color. But your suggestion is not bad and i have no clue what so ever about the “dresscode” at your prom. But wearing a Suit always makes you look sexy, and if you are very smart get one that matches your figure, nothing gets you more laid than a suit where your body shape is visible.@Style-less guy

I just purchased a pair of Grenson’s Dylan Tan Calf shoes. Honestly, I’m not sure what sorts of rules I should follow with pants color with these things. What shades of gray? Is charcoal out of the question? Jeans? Khakis? Let me know! Thanks

James October 22, 2011 - 11:29 pm

What would you say you should wear to a sports game?

Olav October 25, 2011 - 10:32 pm

Hey, great blog. I recently bought a checked, green (and white) shirt. Not dark, nor bright, just pure green, really nice everyday thing with buttoned-down collar. But I’m having trouble finding the right tie for it.

I would love combining it with an exciting tie. I think pictures from Gant or Tommy Hilfiger often combines green with for instance dark red and blue with great success; however my “preppy” dark red and blue striped tie somehow won’t go with this shirt. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot, Olav, Norway

DO you think it would be better to wear a tux or a suit to the prom? Thanks

George, my husband has to wear suits or jackets and slacks at the school where he teaches. He has a black dress shirt with a black, white, and silver diamond patterned tie. I have found a lot of sites recommending either khaki pants or gray pants, but no one says anything about what color jacket to wear. What do you recommend?

I have a question about top sizes. I’m a 36.5 inch chest and typically a large is 44-46 and xlarge is 48-50.

The problem I find is that the large is a tad too tight and the xlarge is too loose.

My shape is not going to change much but I was wondering what tips or advice you can give to make sure I get a good fit?

Hi, i wanted to get your opinion on the shiny down jackets (like the ones made by montcler) for winter. Would they be considered fashionable? Or too “extra” and overdoing it on the getting noticed aspect?

Look forward to hearing from you

Hello,

Could you do an entry on different ways to fold/wear a pocket square? Seems like it ranges quite a bit from just being stuffed in the pocket to the straight edged fold you see on Mad Men. It’d be cool to see a bunch of different ideas and applications. Thanks.

Tom Antram :

Hi George!

I’m looking for soem additions to my wardrobe and wondered if you could advise me in a direction to go? I think I’ve got way too much casual but you advice would be appreciated.

I made you a little video to showcase everything I own.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeLroiPyw_g

What do you think?

Much appreciated

Hey Tom,

Nice compilation! This gave me an overall overview. Here’s what I would add:

– Business shirts (you can wear them in casual situations), in solid colors, stripes or microchecks. I see you have some casual shirts with bigger prints on them but business shirts are better. Also, you can try floral (paisley shirts)

– Ditch the batman, the Che Guevara and the rest of the funny t-shirts

– Some pants are too long. Shorten them and even roll them up to let your colored socks show.

– Try to wear hoodies when indoors or at the gym

– Wear: waistcoats, cotton shorts (higher than knee level), scarves, slim ties, men’s bags

Oren :

Thanks !!

Hey Oren,

Skate shoes aren’t really my thing – too sporty. You can wear them if you like them but I’d go for something classier such as moccasins. Sneakers are good to, they’re very trendy these days. I’d always choose sneakers over skate shoes and, even better, I’d choose a pair of loafers or espadrilles over sneakers any-day.

Up to you. If you feel that skate shoes are your style, go ahead and wear them!

I’d stay away from anything shiny and go for something classic. A cotton or a silk tie would look better. Try injecting some color and some patterns.

Green, yellow, camel, white etc. You can wear pretty much any other color with brown in the same outfit, as long as you can find a way to “tie” all the colors together.

Hi George,
I have a question. I am 27 years old. Last year during the ending of summer season i realize something related to my summer style. I realized that pants in beige, black, blue were much better than a jeans combined with a tshirt but not polo. So i dropped jeans and started wearing casual pants that were still fitted one along with tshirt to give it a casual and cool look. Also one more thing i noticed … its like somehow i am loving shoes that gives more of a rough look rather than any sporty version of casual shoe (e.g sneakers or any stylish colorfull shoes) but boots are not my preference rather a loafer or something like that. Now summers are approaching again and i am unable to understand about what happened during my last season. I mean to say what was that. Am i learning more about my personal style. Am i not a person who after wearing sporty version of casual shoes combined with jeans for so many years …. now realizing that personal style of mine was something else. I am unable to understand this. Help me.

michael :

It depends what kind of dinner you’re talking about. You said “elegant” so the vintage belt has got to go. Try a slim leather belt to match your shoes.

I’m not sure about those pants, are they dark blue or medium blue? Also, what will everyone else be wearing? Are the other guys coming in suits?

Hi Martin,

1. Go for a dark blazer and light colored shirts – you can’t go wrong. A black blazer and a white shirt are a good start. To take it up one leve add a white pocket square, a watch or a tie.

Sure, you can wear t-shirts under a blazer, just make sure you wear casual shoes (Converse, loafers, espadrilles). T-shirts and leather lace-up shoes don’t go together.

Good luck!

Hi Amir,

The more you read about style the more closer you are to finding your own. It’s a never ending journey meaning your style is always changing and evolving. Nothing to worry, it’s a good thing.

can you be more precise about the types of shoes you like? The ones that give you that rough look.

About the pants: wearing casual pants such as chinos is awesome; most guys wear jeans so this is a surefire way for you to be stylish.

Amir February 25, 2012 - 8:43 pm

Hello george
Initially i started with zac efron style but now i am liking ryan gosling ryan reynold, justin timberlake and johannes huebl and very important edwestwick style. I am loving how he is wearing the clothes with coolness. I am loving his style by using brown suede loafers. Maybe esperialdis is i am going to buy in coming summers. In short i am loving how above celebrities are wearing clothes and shoes.@George

Jody February 26, 2012 - 5:53 pm

I need to purchase a tie for my husbands very important business meeting this week, He has a navy pin stripped coat and solid navy pants, what’s the best looking tie for this combo? White shirt, red striped tie?

George February 26, 2012 - 6:22 pm

Hi Judy,

First off, I wouldn’t try to assemble a suit from a pair of pants and a jacket that don’t quite match. There should be a contrast there (e.g. khakis and a dark-blue jacket).

Anyway, A white shirt and a red tie are probably the easiest thing to wear but then again that’s what everyone else will be wearing. At the minimum try to add a white pocket square to make a difference.

Jody February 26, 2012 - 11:12 pm

@George

will go with the khakis then, do you have a different suggestion for the tie then, don’t want him to look like everyone else … this will be several teams of Engineers biding on a job, they already all dress the same (part of the unwritten code of Engineering 101 lol ) want him to not necessarily stand out and feel out of place but to look confident!

George February 27, 2012 - 1:13 am

Jody,
There are plenty of ways in which he can look more professional. He’s not limited to ties (shoes, socks, watches, patterns etc.).

Funny you asked me this question: I’m one day away from the actual launch of my new product which is called Dress for Professional Success ™

I shouldn’t give off the link before the launch but here it is anyway:

Is a black suit + orange shirt appropriate for a valedictory occassion?

Amir March 6, 2012 - 8:48 pm

Dear George,

During my journey of learning style i stumbled upon something… and then a question came to my mind whether what i am doing is really a way to go or not. It was when i learned how to create outfits i stumbled upon this concept. Lets say i saw an outfit of david becham in whihc he is wearing white trainers a blue jeans black leather jacket and a white tshirt of vintage sort of having a black color in it. The whole look was accessorized by only shades. Now here he is using color repetition strategy where he is repiting white of tshirt with white trainers and black design of t with black shades and black jacket. The outfit was suggested for day and hence the white trainers really complimented the look. Now as i understood the right concept behind that outfit so i copied the same and went out. I was looking fantastic. but something was not ok on that day. During all day i felt conscious about my outfit. Although i was able to carry the outfit in a perfect manner. But still… Why was that happening. Was my style personality clashing with what i was trying to project. On that day i realized that maybe i have learned 1 more step in style which says that only wear outfits suggestions that match your personality. Kindly shed your light on this whether i am right or not.

I need some serious help…unique situation.

Alright…I live in the South…Texas to be exact.

Now something you have to understand about southern style is that it’s most common to see rugged looks and cowboy hats. Not alot of people here wear formal clothing, because lets face it, it’s the south.

Now my usual style for clothing is simple and ordinary. Regular t-shirt (think a john deere tee) and maybe some jeans or shorts. I do own a pair of old style converse. Just to give you a feel for how I dress.

Now my question is about hats…I’m not much for cowboy hats…and down here the average person where’s a regular ol hat. Mine is something you’d expect a typical southern boy would wear…a beige callaway golf hat with sweat stains and shaggy and unwoven on the bill from age.

What kind of hat would fit me and the environment I live in that’s not a typical cap or cowboy hat?

Thanks in advance.

Hey George!
First of all, thank you for all the articles and bite-size tips on fashion. I bought your book over 8 months back and WOW!.. Not just women, but also men, senior citizens and even the owner of an H&M store in downtown Beijing have complemented my new found sense of style-and what’s more? My best friend’s cousin asked me “who gives you all the styling advice?”, lol.
To the point, on page 50 of your ebook, a picture of jeans with a unique back pocket design was given. I enjoyed the concept of styling back pockets so can you provide further information on where to get in done for normal Levi’s/Guess jeans or where can we buy jeans with similar back pockets?

Aggy April 9, 2012 - 10:43 am

Hey there. Firstly great site – only stumbled across it recently and I’m now wading through as many articles as possible and getting some gems of advice from them!

A friend of mine once told me that if you’re going to a casual venue, overdress very slightly. If you’re going to a more formal venue, underdress very slightly. I’m not talking going for a few beers with your mates in a tuxedo, but just a slight adjustment to help you stand out a bit, whilst not sticking out like a sore thumb.

Firstly – do you agree with that advice?

Secondly – In casual situations where you’re trying to dress up a bit more – how would you dress slightly smarter without turning up looking like you’re off to a wedding? If there’s one or two key items(either accessories or particular types of shirts/shoes) that could make any casual outfit look smarter, I’d be very pleased to hear about it!

Loving what you’ve done here, It’s nice to have a resource such as yourself on various styles, information simply is too scattered everywhere. So thanks, it’s the only Blog I actually read, kudos to you.

My question is about your package, I was wondering if all this information (your modules) is available in a published book. I am interested in the package but I would be much more interested if it was available as a physical book, and this is not specified.

Kind Regards,

Leonidas :

Indeed black and orange work fine but, given the occasion, I’d make the entire outfit a little more complex.

Maybe try a checked shirt (white + orange), a pocket square, a tie and/or a boutonniere?

I’m not really a fan of splitting up a suit and wearing the jacket separately but you could replace it with a black sports jacket.

Hi George

First of all thank you for making this wonderful blog and for all your articles. I just discovered it but I found all your tips really useful (and I come from Italy, probably the world’s most fashion addict country) 🙂

I wanted to ask your opinion about body grooming: I am very hairy on the chest, back & shoulders and this is clearly obvious the moment I wear a dress shirt (especially with 1-2 buttons open).
Sometimes I trimmed my chest, especially duirng summer time, but I got mixed reaction from women.
Some liked it (as its fashion now to show an hair-free chest) and some not, as they found an hairy chest more “masculine”!

So what is your though about the issue?

I add that I am a tall & slim guy, with more muscle definition than mass.

Thank you

I’m in need of shirt and tie advice. I have a wedding to attend and have a dark brown suit with a very fine orange pinstripe running through. I know that i could oviously go for a cream or off white but would rather have something that looked good when i took off the jacket. What do you think ?

Mark May 20, 2012 - 6:10 pm

Hi george!
I’ve got my university summer ball coming up – there is no specified dress code, and as it is an outside, summery event, I’ve opted for the beige chinos, white shirt and blue blazer (with white tubing) look. However, I’m struggling to find a decent tie to go with the outfit! Could you suggest anything? I’m mega stuck!

Thanks!

Hi, I need an advice. I’ve been invited to a birthday party in a club and I’m not sure what to wear. I’m 38 and it’s been quite a while since I’ve been clubbing! I have recently bought a nice blue blazer so I was thinking to wear that and then match it with a white shirt, maybe dark blue trousers and brown shoes. Would that work for a night out? Thanks!

Hi. I would be really happy if you help me. I am getting married in September at the Adriatic see. We’ll be some time on the large sailboat for the ceremony and the reception will be at a pool in the hotel.
I kindly ask you for advice what to wear. I was thinking smart yacht club style but I don’t know exactly what.

Hello, Ive recently purchased a quality brown pair of tassel loafers. I am going to Royal Ascot in Windsor, England on friday and you have to dress to the nines. I am planning on wearing a navy suit, brown belt and the brown shoes probably with a white shirt and navy tie. Now, heres my problem. I need a pocket square / tie combo. But im not sure if I should match my socks to the pocket square ( the socks will be on show slightly.

Hi George,

I was wondering what your opinion on hi-top sneakers is, especially when worn with shorts (with long trousers, you can’t see them anyways). I LOVE my hi-top Chucks (canvas and black) and I wear them with pretty much everything. Do you think I should opt for low-top ones, next time I’m getting new ones?

Thanks, and keep up the good work. I really appreciate it!

What shoes go with a brown plaid fedora ?

Alex July 14, 2012 - 6:17 pm

I have a pair of grey dress shoes.
I know the rule of thumb is to match belts with shoes but grey is not your common dress shoe color.
What belt colors will go best with my shoes? Grey on grey just seems odd.
Thanks for your help.

Hi George!

I’ll be attending a casual masquerade party, and I wanted to go with this light but bright blue bow tie I have. Can I wear it with a checkered dark blue short sleeve shirt and a blazer or should I look for others? Also, do you think a black blazer is suitable for that or I should get a gray one?

Thanks, and cheers to you and your awesome site!

Hi George, I really enjoy reading your views on men’s style. Keep up the good work. Today I read your post on what women think of the way you dress. Is it the case that women respond best to guys wearing an open neck shirt and sweater with for example a pair of jeans. I enjoy wearing ties and is it a good idea to add a tie to that casual mix when chatting to girls in clubs etc..? I see in your article that you wore ties with khaki’s etc.. and it seemed to work well for you with women. Is a dress shirt, v neck sweater and jeans a good look with the opposite sex in your experience? Thank You, David

double breasted or three piece what would you recommend and why?I already have a charcoal grey pinstripe three piece and I like the look of a double breasted. And the next question is pinstripe or solid and why? Also how would I pick a color i’m considering sunshine yellow or a deep purple or a light teal color how do I pick? mostly I would be wearing these around my school in the northeast. Also regarding the colors I could probably pull any of them off. thanks Kyle

Running shoes, Sneakers or Outdoor varieties?

Mitch Eusebio October 12, 2012 - 12:12 am

George,

I read an article regarding dressing your age. I am 49 but most people tell me I look like I am in my 30’s. Is it wrong to dress younger if most people think that you are younger? Second question if I may. Are there clothes or styles that you would consider timeless? Fortuneatlely mens styles do not change as often as women. I have alwasy worn a 40 regular suit. I tried one on that in my closet from 10 years ago (Hugo Boss) and it was HUGE on me as the new styles are more trim fitting, which I love. Of course the suit from 10 years ago was in style 10 years ago. If I were to have some custom suits made, is there a style of pant or jacket that would be in style but more timeless as well or is that just wishful thinking?

First of all thanx… its been great reading all your articles on the site… been crazy helpful.

I got a pair of beige sneakers and am having trouble matching them to anything I wear. What do you suggest I wear for a sort of semi-casual look.

Karl October 29, 2012 - 1:27 pm

In regards to matching socks to ties for formal-wear, there are no decent articles on the matter.
I have purchased some white business socks and have died them personally a strong bold red, as it was impossible to find business socks in any interesting color, particularly the shade of red I was after.
The ensemble was composed of a black suit with white dress shirt with french cuffs. Strong, bold red cuff-links, a thick tie and pocket square matching the shade of red with black formal shoes. This ensemble is the figment of power and commitment with such shades in contrast. The socks died were to match this outfit as an extra way of getting noticed.

My suggestion was to write an article on matching colored or patterned socks to formal-wear rather than casual-wear as has previously been written. These articles can’t be found online in any real reliable manner, it may be another opportunity for you.

Johnny November 1, 2012 - 3:40 pm

Hello George,

Your e-book is absolute the best
style guide I found so far And I have
about 5 (most from PUA community).

I have question about bracelets, chains and pendants for men.

What kind does fit for men in their 40s.

I newer use accessories in office, but thik it’s
kind of cool to have in clubs.

George November 1, 2012 - 9:08 pm

Hi Johnny,

I really appreciate that you find my guide so useful. As you know, you have high priority when it comes to answering questions so here goes:

For a man in his 40s, it’s not a good idea to try and dress like a 20 year old. Bracelets should be kept conservative (those with spikes are a no-no). Pendants and chains should also be avoided. Think watches, scarves, hats, ties and so on.

HOWEVER

If that 40 year old is in the dating game and he wants a woman that’s primarily physically attractive, wearing bolder accessories might do the trick. In this case, there’s a certain dose of sh*t that he might have to take from those around him (and some women) but if it’s congruent with his personality, my style rules shouldn’t stop him. If he’s frequenting clubs, those accessories make indeed more sense.

In the end it’s his choice. Maybe he wants to experiment. Don’t forget the fact that most women EXPECT a 40-year old guy to be wise, calm and reasonably wealthy. So going for a more formal style makes A LOT of sense. It’s up for everyone to ultimately decide what he’s going to wear.

Hi George, I really like the Johnny Depp style and while I was reading your posts about him ( http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/tops/how-to-make-a-t-shirt-stand-out and http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/style-icons/johnny-depps-style-secrets-exposed-pictures ) I remembered that I was 5 foot 5 and that I had the curse of shortness on my side. I also read http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/practical-advice/the-deffinitive-style-guide-for-short-men and the tips i got from it basically killed my idea of doing anything close to Johnny Depp`s style. I guess my question is how can I integrate both Johnny Depp’s style where he has so much accessories and other clothing like scarves, hats and other crazy stuff with my shortness, it just seems like they don`t coexist. Also I have lighter skin and dark brown hair if that helps. Thanks,

Stephen

I also remembered in the http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/tops/how-to-make-a-t-shirt-stand-out post that guys with light skin (which I have) should wear darker colored clothes but in http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/practical-advice/the-deffinitive-style-guide-for-short-men you say to wear bright clothes, so i am in the dilemma of if I should darker colored shirts and dress shirts for my light skin or to wear brighter colored clothes to make me taller. I really do like the Johnny Depp style but I am just not sure what to do the match the color and style right. How am I going to do any outfits like in this post http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/style-icons/johnny-depps-style-secrets-exposed-pictures if having Monochromatic clothes is better? so can i still do the scarves, hats, glasses, different colored clothes and still get away with looking taller? or am i going to have to amp it down and choose Monochromatic outfits? Will i be able to wear necklaces and have lots of bracelets on like he does? all of this as really bothered me for a while because I am trying to plan out some Johnny Depp inspired outfits to buy and I have no idea how to start because of all the dilemmas.

Thanks once again.

Hey Stephen,

Thanks for the kind words and I’m really happy that you’re actively doing things to improve your style.

Johnny Depp indeed wears t-shirts and you can do, too, nothing wrong with that. There are other tips you can apply to make yourself look taller.

Wear stripped scarves, hats (Johnny wears a lot of fedoras) and try to ditch belts when you can (you need to pants to fit you perfectly).

That being said, you can still wear leather bracecelts and casual rings, those won’t do much to alter your perceived height.

You just need to find colors that will do both contrast and make you look taller. Your skin will make good contrast with medium shades, so I’d say the sweet-spot is there.

Medium gray, medium brown, medium blue, dark yellow, medium-dark red, these will do decent contrast. And, you wear them from top to bottom you’ll get that elongation effect as well.

Just remember you don’t have to wear the EXACT same color top to bottom, that can actually be disturbing (depending on the color).

For instance, you could wear a medium red t-shirt with a pair of burgundy chinos (dark red). No belt, of course.

Also, remember that patterns such as checks our -will make you look taller as well as wider.

Hi,

I do a lot of style for young men. Most guys indeed wear suits and they look boring in them.

You basically got to options: you can either wear a suit and try to make it look interesting (by adding colored shirts, colored socks, pocket squares) or you can wear a sports jacket and a blazer with a pair of chinos.

Hey Juno,

Ties and bow-ties should only be worn with long-sleeved shirts. The color of the shirt is good, though. I’d go for the gray blazer, it’s going to look much more interesting.

Have fun!

I used to have a couple dress shirts i acquired while living in Japan. They were a single cuff shirt — that you could either use cufflinks or on less formal occassions, it had a button and you could use that in place of the cufflinks. Either option, you couldn’t tell whether it was a cufflink shirt or regular button shirt. Have you ever seen this type of shirt? Do you know a manufacturer who makes them, and possibly their URL.

Hey Enzo,

Usually lighter color but that’s mostly valid for fashion items that frame your face (e.g. shirts, scarves). The key to a great outfit is color matching, and this means you need to wear darker color as well to make contrast.

Hey David,

You can do it by adding some more color, some patterns and some other fashion items.

How about a pair of suede leather grey or brown boots? A fair isl sweater or a cardigan to go over your shirt? Maybe a knitted tie?

What are the best advices for young but very muscular guys?

Thank you!

stephen December 14, 2012 - 7:39 am

Hey George,

I have posted on here before, but i come back now to ask another question. Suits, suits for short men. I was wondering what are all the tips and tricks to look tall in a suit for short men, i am looking for something stylish. Like how much of the shirt cuff should show from the suit jacket, how short should i crop the suit jacket and what lapel, that sort of stuff. And should I have the pants be low rise and have a break? I am 5’5″ 123 pounds, chest 34.5 inch, shoulder 18 inch, 21.75 inch, and length from shoulder to base of thumb is 25 inch ( I should cut that down to have a short jacket?). I am just confused on what proportions and what tricks i should use. I already know about monochromatic colors and pinstripe suit and dress shirt will make me taller. I am just wondering what advice you would have for me or any short man to get a custom made suit.

I’m a recently divorced 48 year old. I’m starting to go out to meet new people however my wardrobe primarily consists of corporate work clothes. My social life will consist of restaurants, jazz clubs, and social gatherings all in mixed company. I ask for style advice. Anything you could share on fashion advice would be greatly appreciated. for example, when is it appropriate to wear button down shits, sweaters, layers, slacks, jeans, etc. Also guidance on styles of clothes would help as well in addition to any reference links or articles. In other words, I am in desparate need of style advice. Thanks in advance.

Hello!

Hey Daniel,
I would try to show off my muscles but in a more sublte way than most guys do it. It depends on which parts of your body are most developed. I would stay away from really tight t-shirts as they’re just too common and, instead, focus on style.

The same style rules apply to muscular guys as well, only they will look better in any clothes.

Hey Stephen,

Welcome back.

The best type of suit for short men is pinstripe, with a single breasted jacket and in a lighter color. Since you know about the pinstripe, the next thing you can do to look taller is to ayways wear a tie in favor of a bow tie. The tie will elongate yout upper body.

The cuff should show about 1.5 inches from the jacket, just like for anybody else.

The fit should be perfect, as always. The jacket should be long enough to cover the upper halves of your buttocks. Low rise pants are ok and the break should be about 1.5 inches above the sole of the shoe. try to stay away from cuffed pants as they will take away from your height.

Hey Robert,

My recommendation would be for you to start reading everything on this blog. I don’t have a guide for seniors just yet, but things like button down shirts, bolder colors, well fitting clothes, accessoriezing… these should all get your attetion.

YOur goal should be to look as young as possible (5-10 years would be a reasonable goal) but without going overboard.

For instance, wearing colored chino pants would be great for you (as long as the color isn’t too flashy) but wearing 3-4 casual rings might be too much.

Try to find a style that combines casual and formal, yet try to incline the balance in favor of casual as much as you can.

Hi Harry,

Wearing a tie while having the first button unbuttoned on your shirt is ok for casual encounters. For office, I would go bespoke and get custom shirts that would fit my neck.

I followed your advice and bought a slim tie. For clubbing or just going out with friends, is it ok to wear my shirt untucked with the tie, or should I tuck it in? I’d be wearing a nice pair of jeans or chinos.

Thanks,
Matt

@George
George, First off Happy Holidays to you and best of health in the upcoming year. Thanks for the previous advise you gave me. I have a few followup questions regarding sweaters that I’d appreciate if you could give me your advice on. Question one..Is wearing a V neck sweater over a crew neck T shirt fashionable. And qurstion two pertains to the colors. I have a quite a few solid color sweaters but not sure which colors are advisable. I favor the darker colors however I have a few beige and yellow colored ones. Are these colors advisable if I’m trying to impress a date? As always, your opinion on this and any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jeremy January 4, 2013 - 4:01 am

Hey George. I have always been afraid of being stylish. I am worried my mom thinks I am gay (nothing wrong with it) i dont date much. I am not heavily overweight, but i work out 6 days a week prepping for football. I am only sixteen. I want to look good. Not a whole lot of income but, is there a simple way that i could start looking better and just gradually get more daring? I never liked pocket squares or ties in a school setting. Any help would be great! Keep up the great work!

I read an article regarding dressing your age. I am 49 but most people tell me I look like I am in my 30′s.

Hey Mitch,

What exactly are you wearing when you say you’re dressing younger?

Dressing younger should miply bolder colors, wearing patterns (microchecks, thin stripes etc.), not crazy haircuts or ripped jeans. I’m just saying that to be on the same page…

Indeed, many fashion items for men are timeless. Most of the ones I talk about in my blog and newsletter are timeless, starting from ties and pocket squares to suits, leather jackets, sports jackets, chino pants etc. etc. etc.

If the suit looks huge on you, I’d take it to a tailor and see if they can adjust it. I don’t know what it looks like but I get it’s not outdated at all. Is it corduroy?

Hi George,
I am following your website and mail from the last couple of days. Do you have any advice for the people who have less hair? I am 29 but I am nearly bald. Both side of the forehead and skull is about to be empty. What should I wear and what should I avoid to match? Kindly advice.

Ron January 30, 2013 - 2:58 am

What color shirt and sweater can you match to brown/tan or dark blue pants?

Hi
I have a blog that answers fashion questions from women but I have a man-ish fashion problem. I’m required to wear a full suit and tienand the tie has a layer of “stuffing” inside. How can I tie it so the knot doesn’t get too bulky and if you could suggest more than one good looking tie knot I’d appreciate it 🙂

Thank you

The collar should be ideally on the inside but if you unbutton the first button of the shirt, this will be harder to pull off. If the V-neck you’re wearing is too wide and it doesn’t hold the collar on the inside, consider a button-down collar.

Hello, I recently bought these maroon/burgundy sneakers but I don’t know what to wear it with.

I have a brown skin tone (Indian, but on the lighter side) with a tinge of yellow. I’ve been told tan’s, yellows, and khaki colors don’t work well with me. I also like to dress on the formal side of casual. Got any ideas?

Hey there.
I just had my black skinny jean. And I really want to wear them with my black Madden Jessta boots. If I do, is it gonna be a white T-shirt on black belt, or white topman shirt inside with a slim shirt. All black is not an option.

George,

I’m looking for opportunities to dress down a white suit jacket for office use in my government job. I’m thinking of using a well fitted black linen shirt, black pants with a well fitted white jacket, white paisley tie and cuff links, white belt and either black or white shoes. What would you make of this setup?

Kind regards,
Karl

Hi George,

I have a wedding to attend this weekend, and dont want to buy another suit. I have a charcoal grey suit and would like to just make use of that. Can you give me shirt and tie/bow tie ideas and combinations that i can possibly wear? Thank you

Simon April 27, 2013 - 12:51 pm

Hi George,

I’m fast approaching my 30th birthday and I’ve decided I really want to smarten up my style. I’ve been in a bit of a rut clothing-wise for years. I pretty much live in t-shirts, jeans, hoodies and trainers. I have to admit I’m completely clueless when it comes to fashion – how to match up colours, what items go well together, accessories etc etc

I work in a creative/technical role in media so its a very casual environment that involves a fair bit of outdoor working so I dont have the opportunity to dress up for work. Recently I’ve started changing my clothes when I get home into something smarter.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me advice on good looks to go for or an idea of how to put together what I’ve already bought – if I’m on the right track – or more options of staples to go for.

I bought a couple of grey chambray workshirt-style shirts a while back and a pair of black trousers. I’ve recently bought a pair of burgundy slim corts and dark brown chinos. I got a tweed jacket off ebay that I really like. I wore it with a white shirt and slim black tie to a wedding recently and a friend complimented me on it and said I should wear shirt and tie more often so I’d like to go with that, but be able to keep it casual as well as dress it up for special occassions.

I’ve got a navy pinstripe suit and dark blue, black and white shirts. I’m extremely lacking on the footwear front as all I really own are trainers and a pair of cheap fake leather smart-ish black shoes.

I’m quite short – 5’6 and fairly slim with shoulder length blonde hair.

I saw a couple of looks I liked. http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-…d=2563950&WT.ac=rec_viewed , http://www.kinowear.com/blog/kinowea…ck-rebel-class and http://www.thedrum.com/uploads…89707/main_images/caffreys.jpg

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Nada April 28, 2013 - 10:17 am

Appears to be good advice, but learn how to tie your tie. In that ad on the right, it just looks sloppy, too wide, flat, poor dimple and not taut.

George April 28, 2013 - 10:37 am

Can you post up one of your knots, please? I tihnk the width of the knot is perfect for that shirt collar.

Thomas May 10, 2013 - 4:44 am

Hey George I’ve recently gotten a job with cpsi it’s a big company and I got a bunch of shirts pants and a few suits for it it’s starting to get to hot out so I stopped wearing the suits but still wear long sleeves with ties slacks belt polished shoes etc I’ve been complimented a lot by my co workers on how I dress keep in mind that this dressing up is fairly new to me but I like to dress nice I am Hispanic so I have a darker complexion I know that green goes well with my skin tone I was just wondering if you might be able to help give me some ideas what to wear I’m not afraid to wear certain colores I’ve worn pink blue white green shirts that are stripped but tomorrow I’m going to wear a yellow shirt I’ve spent a lot of time trying on ties and the only one I saw that looked decent was a blue one and a black tie that kinda looks like it has four leaf clovers that are green lime green and a sort of silver color and has a few black circles in them but I really wanted to ask was what would a good color combination be with a yellow shirt it’s not pale yellow I guess it’s just regular yellow if you could help me out and give me a few pointers I’d appreciate it thanks

Hey George. I was just curious on how I can change up my style with just a few subtle changes. I live in a blue collar, working class town so I would like an outfit that shows that and I am not that keen about gaudy clothing. How can I have a simple, basic style while sticking to my blue collar, country boy roots (minus any cowboy boots)? Thank you for your time.

I am a nerd and up until recently wore cargo pants and a lumberjack style jacket. I know. But its getting better.

I know own chinos, blazers and a pair of red leather brogues. But I want to acessorize. What is a bold accessory I could try, I have been looking at cravats and ties but they seem to formal for just going out. I don’t want to wear a scarf, I will look two much like a friend. Thank you in advance.

shak January 25, 2014 - 7:29 pm

Hi. What tips do you have for footwear for slightly shorter than average men? Another website suggested the following:
1. Focus on shape and fastening type.
2. A slight heel will add height and improve posture, crucial to appearing taller.
3. A pointed toe will lengthen and alter the direction in which the eye travels.
4. Converse styles with contrasting toe caps have same effect as pointed styles (Btw what about contrast laces?).
5. Contrast soles appear heightened – white soles are extremely effective.
6. Tucked in laces will elongate whilst untucked or buckles will widen.
What do you think George? Thanks.

Lucas January 26, 2014 - 11:33 pm

George,

I just went and got some nice cashmere sweaters in light gray, charcoal, and navy. I have the assortment of chinos in the basic colors and some dressier pants in navy, dark brown, and dark gray.

Which color sweaters go with which color pant?
Should I be wearing a solid white shirt when I wear a sweater to the office, or are patterned shirts allowed? If yes, how do you sync the shirt color or pattern color with the sweater and pant?

If you can recommend a site or book that gives advice on color matching schemes, I would love to get my hands on that!! Thanks. Lucas

Raymond January 31, 2014 - 11:52 pm

Dear George.

I will be attending a wedding and would love to wear my coffee brown suit (I’ld love to do the standard white button-covered shirt, no tie, black belt and black shoes).
Problem is: the pants of the suit have been damaged but the jacket remains in mint condition and fits on me perfect.
Kindly advise on what alternative color of pants could go with a coffee brown jacket and white shirt.

Thanks.

In the Bestylish book you showed a picture of the shaving brush you used
but did not include the manufacturers name. I felt it should have been
included because as one who purchased the course I did so to take your
recommendations and would like to know what brand you are using.

George May 25, 2014 - 12:26 am

Hey Lawrence,

Two reasons for that: that brush is no nane and I’m located in Europe. I’m sure you can find similar products in your country.

Mohammed Arshad August 5, 2015 - 6:31 am

Dear Mr. George

Hope this message finds you well.

I’m about to attend my sister’s wedding and wanted to ask few styling questions:

1. I’m planning a suit (I’m considering solid blue or grey color), which kind of fit should I prefer i.e. slim, skinny or normal (I’m fair, average height, lean guy).
2. Which shoes should I prefer (Let me mention that I’d be using the shoes later for daily office wear). I’m planning a tasseled loafer in brown color. Will that work on formals and jeans too?
3. I have wavy hair, so which haircut should I prefer?
4. I have full beard, so which style should I prefer (I’m fair, round faced 25 years lean guy)

I shall be really thankful if I get complete advice on the above.

Bobby September 29, 2015 - 12:34 am
