Last week I showed you the shoes I got from Stacy Adams. The unboxing, to be precise. But that doesn’t really tell us anything on how good they would look with a real outfit, does it?
In case you missed my first post, Stacy Adams unveiled a brand new line of men’s shoes and they asked my to give my opinion of it. I chose a pair of Hawthorne shoes and I anxiously waited their arrival via UPS.
In the meantime I had time to take some photos of these double monk strap shoes, and I’ll tell you how I made them shine. I wore:
– a fuchsia dress shirt
– a burgundy v-neck sweater
– a black leather jacket
– a gray wool pocket square with a fishbone pattern
– and a pair of dyed blue jeans
Let’s take a look at some of these photos, shall we?
As you can see, there’s a partial match between the shirt and the top and a FULL match between Stacy Adams shoes and my jacket.
The two style secrets that are making this outfit work are number 1 – color – and number 2 – color matching.
Want one for yourself?
Well, not the whole outfit, just the shoes. To win them, you need to do three simple things.
First, please carefully read the Official Rules found here.

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Stacy Adams for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hey guys,
This article is rather special. I was asked to try on a pair of boots by Stacy Adams and, to be honest, the hardest part was NOT writing this article and taking the shots. It was picking the right pair for my wardrobe needs.
As I’m already stocked up of brogues, desert boots and other common types of shoes, I decided to shoot for the moon and go for the all mighty monk-strap boot… or Hawthorne as they call it.
Why? Let me ask you this: how may people have you seen lately, that are wearing them?
The monk strap shoe needs no introduction for the style aficionado, yet very few newbies dare to (at least) try it on. This boggles me since monk strap shoes stand out in a very subtle way. There’s nothing gross or flashy about them.
I was curious as to what this new line of shoes is all about, so I was a little nervous when I open the box. TO my surprise, the shoes I got are amazing!
Take a look at my Stacy Adams pair below:
As you can see, the round toe cap is the one I always recommend for shoes (although you can go for something a little more square if that’s what you like).
The straps are, obviously, the best part. They stand out in a very subtle way and the black goes well with my otherwise amazing pair of dyed blue jeans. Here’s the link to the actual pair, by the way.
Do you want one for yourself?
If you like them, you’re in luck. I’m hosting this giveaway (my very first, actually) and you get to win a pair of Stacy Adams Shoes.
Here’s what you need to do (really simple).
Number one, please read carefully the contest rules found here.
Second, leave a comment below with your email address and you’re automatically in!

With all this talk about shoes and how well they can make an outfit stand out, very few of us remember that we should also take care of them.

Just cleaning them up with a silicon sponge isn’t enough. Leather needs nutrients and a solid yet easy step-by-step process to make it look its best and, of course, to prolong the shoe’s lifetime.

Take a look at the videos below to see how these guys do it. The first one shows you how the professionals do it. Naturally, this also yields the best shoe shine.

(Correction: I did mention shoe shining about this in the past, I even gave you a step-by-step method to do it, you can check it out here.)

While this one show you how to do it yourself at home:

One of the biggest mistakes that guys make when winter is getting close is this: they don’t choose footwear that can protect them from cold.

If you ever had the curiosity to watch how people dress in November, you definitely noticed one thing that made me smile just the other day: a lot of women are already wearing boots, while guys are still in their white sneakers.

Now I’m willing to bet you’ll see a lot of sneakers worn by guys even when it’s going to snow. That’s hilarious, right? Well, not as funny as the guy I saw the other day wearing sandals in November!

The good (?) news was that he wasn’t wearing any socks (thus, he didn’t break the no socks with sandals rule).

Whether you found those real world examples funny or not, it’s time to think about winter footwear.

Here are a few of my picks that I highly encourage you to wear. Some of these boots are expensive but don’t let that scare you. You can find cheaper footwear of almost the same quality if you keep your eyes open. Just make sure the shape and the fabric are the same (or close).

You’ll have to agree: us men have plenty of shoe types to choose from when we want to impress. Brogues (with all their varieties), boat shoes, espadrilles and monk-strap shoes are just a few examples.

Walk into any shoe store and you’ll see all of the above all lined up, waiting for you to purchase them. But should you?

Dig a little deeper and you might just discover a nice pair of tassel shoes.

The thing that sets this shoe apart from all others is – you got it – the tassel.

You can get tassels shoes in either regular leather or suede. Both of these pairs have perforations (similar to brogue shoes)>

photo: http://leffot.com

Tassel shoes work great with just about any outfit, from casual to something that you would wear on a special occasion (think wedding).

If you’re a nonconformist you can wear them with your business attire but make sure you choose a darker color. Remember that dressing for success is also about avoiding bold colors and anything that may be too much of a distraction to your business partners.

Mix up a tassel shoe with a moccasin and what do you get? Driving mocs

photo: http://leffot.com

Those in lavender are quite a fashion statement, aren’t they? Anyway, if you drive a lot, these may just be the thing for you (in whichever color you prefer).

Those were some really REALLY nice examples and, if you’re not thinking of getting at least a pair similar to those in the near future, you might as well stop learning about style altogether.

But if you are, let me show you some great outfits that incorporate these amazing shoes.

Let’s say you’re going out. You could try…

Now let’s say you’re going to an important business meeting, face-to-face sale or a job interview. You may opt for…

Probably the edgiest combos with tassel shoes come from GQ (what a surprise).

Some of them are a little too much but GQ’s outfits are always a great resource to learn about color matching.

Before I show you the goods, let’s be perfectly clear on something: I’m not going to show you the latest fashion trends in shoes. Not even close.

The shoes I’m about to recommend have been around for years and they still will be for some time. They are STYLISH not FASHIONABLE. This means they’ll look good and be in trend for YEARS to come.

Forget about fashion for a moment because a good pair of shoes should last you at least 4-5 years. (I’ll show you how to prolong your shoes lifetime at the end, by the way.)

For spring, a nice pair of leather shoes will do the trick. You have to options here: you can go for regular leather, such as:

photo: Leffot.com

These classic brogues have an amazing reddish brown color and will go great with:

– khakis
– green, brown, red and taupe chinos
– grey and brown suits
– green, yellow, brown and white tops (shirts, V-necks etc.)

Brogues seem to be everyone’s favorite type of shoe these days. You can wear them with almost anything:

photo: gq.com

If you already have brogues (you should!) then you’re ready to move on to a different type of shoe: the monk strap. Let’s take a look at this double monk strap of a darker brown:

photo: Leffot.com

Just like brogues, you can wear them both in a business meeting, at the office or when going out. (Avoid wearing them too much in crowded nightclubs, though. Nobody will see them and you might ruin them if lots of people accidentally step on your toes.)

All right, let’s move on to suede. I’ve managed to get a lot of suede shoes lately (you’ve probably seen my spectator shoes and I can’t tell you the attention they got in the streets) so here’s what I’m recommending:

photo: Leffot.com

Here’s how you would wear chukka boots.

If it’s summer, you can skip the socks or, better yet, go for the “no show socks” that I always recommend to my style students.

This pair of chukka boots is great for spring and even summer. I know you think you can’t wear boots in the summer but fashion and style have lots of surprises.

Chukka boots and desert boots work great even when it’s hot outside, despite their name. Just make sure you wear them with a no-show or a low-cut sock, to keep your perspiration from penetrating the shoe.

The following pair of spectator shoes is great for spring, but you have to be a little more advanced in style to be able to wear it:

photo: Leffot.com

If you think it’s too much, just stick with style for at least 2 years and I guarantee that you’ll change your mind.

Too hot outside for classic leather shoes? Let’s see some examples of shoes that you should wear exclusively during the summer. How about these boat shoes?

Dark-olive is a nice neutral color that works well with most colors.

photo: Leffot.com

photo:

Want something even more casual? How about a nice pair of espadrilles?

photo:

Espadrilles are towards the casual end of the shoes spectrum, if you will. The only things I can think of that are more casual than them are sandals and slipper.

You CAN wear espadrilles in the city, though they’re best suited for the beach. Up to you.

Let’s see a full outfit involving espadrilles. Would you wear it?

photo:

Funny, I already published this article when I remembered I didn’t give you my tips to prolong your shoes’ lifetime. Here they are:

1. Wear them by rotation. Give them at least 24 hours of rest.
2. Always shine your shoes. Shoe shining is not just for aesthetics but it has an important role in keeping the leather in shape.
3. Pay special attention to suede. Don’t wear suede shoes if it’s raining outside. After you do wear them, use a cleaning brush + suede spray to brush off the dust and keep the leather in top shape.

To be honest, I think gladiator sandals are underestimated and even banished by some people for no good reason. Yes, wearing a sends you back to the times of Emperor Nero of Rome, who had gladiators fight to the death in the arena for his own amusement.

But are gladiator sandals all that bad?

To answer that question, let’s analyse them for a moment:

Gladiators sandals are nothing more than regular sandals with a twist. They go higher up the foot and have more intricate models.

Will this trend catch in 2012?

This might have been a trend back in the days of Julius Caesar but what about nowadays?

I think the trend started as early as 2007 when gladiator sandals appeared in one of Chanel’s collections (for women). For men, gladiator sandals made their way starting around 2009-2010.

Here’s a photo of a guy wearing a white pair with A SUIT! Not the way I recommend them to be worn but – hey – it’s the catwalk.

In 2011 they seem to have gone a step further and became even more present. Could 2012 be the year where they really take off?

Why should men wear gladiator sandals?

One thing is for sure: even if 2011 was their best year, gladiator sandals for men will not completely disappear in 2012. This means that, if you want to try a pair just for trend’s sake, you may do so.

And even if you’re not a trend follower, you may still like the simplicity of gladiator sandals, especially in casual situations. Which brings us to the next question:

Where can you wear them?

Gladiator sandals are an extremely casual type of footwear, in the same league with regular sandals and espadrilles.

This means you can wear them at the beach and even in the city on very hot days.

Bad times to wear them include bars, clubs, dinners (formal or informal) and every other situation that’s more formal.

Dos and dont’s

The first thing to keep in mind when wearing them is this: no socks with gladiator sandals. Yes, the rule still applies and it makes perfect sense.

How to match them

if you’ve been a serious style student of mine (did you get all your style materials I’ve put up for you?), you can answer this question on your own. Since a good pair of gladiator sandals is made entirely of leather, you can match it with other accessories such as:

  • leather belts
  • (leather) bracelets
  • men’s bags
  • wallets

On top of that you want the rest of your outfit to be in sync with your shoes. For example, you can wear a pair of brown gladiator sandals with a pair of khakis that you can roll up for a more relaxed look.

Can you think of other ways to wear this type of sandal?

Shoes versus sandals

The title of the article mentions sandals but there are also gladiator shoes. As you might expect, they have a sturdier construction yet, all my advice in this article applies to both gladiator sandals and shoes.

Here’s a photo just so you can notice the difference. These gladiator shoes are from Alexander McQueen:

Lookbook

Ok, let’s see some cool examples of outfits that include gladiator sandals.

Gabriel from Zurich is wearing them with a simple pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pendant:

… while Filippo from Milan is wearing them with a dress shirt. Notice how he matched the sandals with his bag:

Here’s another interesting attire. it all starts with a simple pair of shorts and a white polo but the accessories are in the spotlight:

Here’s one last photo, my favorite. Brown gladiator sandals, dark blue blazer, striped blue and white t-shirt. Also notice the accessories, all coordinated:

Would you wear gladiator sandals? Why or why not?

One of the things I always stress to my style students is attention to detail. No matter where you go, make sure you’ve got the right outfit and that you’re always trying to make a statement.

But what about when you’re going out to a beach (either for a walk or to get a tan)? If you’ve never thought about what to wear in such situations… it’s time.

This article will focus particularly on flip-flops, then I’m going to give you some suggestions of what to wear with them.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. There are plenty of summer choices out there, such as sandals, espadrilles, boat shoes and other types of moccasins. But flip-flops are cool and I’ll tell you why.

First off, flip-flops will give you that casual vibe that you should project when going to a casual encounter. Have you ever seen guys go to the beach in leather shoes? Scary, isn’t it? I always pictured them walking with them through sand – FAIL.

Which brings me to my first point about flip-flops:

Where?

Wear them:

– at the beach
– at a family picnic
– at a barbecue
– in an Aquapark

Don’t wear them:

– in restaurants
– when going out to a bar, club or just out

As you can see, flip-flops have a pretty narrow set of situations where they’re appropriate. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking about what what kind to get and how to match them. Which leads us to…

What fabric should my flip-flops be?

This is an easy one. First choice is leather, second choice is rubber.

You would think leather is inappropriate for hot summer days but leather flip-flops are an exception. Leather means quality and a quality flip-flop is what you’re after. Your foot won’t have any trouble breathing because flip-flops have excellent air circulation (due to their construction), so that’s not a problem.

If you can’t find any leather flip-flops and you’re no the run, it’s OK to go for rubber or some other kind of synthetic fabric. These won’t be as durable as leather ones but they will be cheaper.

How to match them with the rest of the outfit?

Before I would purchase my flip-flops, I would have in mind the clothes I’ll be wearing them with. I’d try to have flip-flops complete my avatar in some way.

Example. I have a military khaki polo shirt, a pair of khaki shorts, a beige baseball cap and a pendant that has US Army written on it. Can you guess which avatar I’m wearing? Yep, it’s military.

Now, what flip-flops should I be wearing? If your answer was “the ones in the first picture from this article”, you’re absolutely right.

Say you’re wearing a blue and white t-shirt with blue or white short. It only makes sense to get some flip-flips in those colors. Something like this:

Warning about matching your flip-flops

I know you look at the above picture and you think that blue color stands out a lot. But, when you wear them, all the entire sole will be hidden below your foot so most of the blue color will not be there. This is important to keep in mind when matching them with the rest of your outfit.

Where to get them

There’s always the option to get them right when you’re on your way to the beach, but then you won’t have the luxury of getting exactly what you want. You can find Flip Flops for the Summer at JD in their virtual store, where you can get both the flip-flops in the 2 pictures above and many other fantastic models.

I’ve talked a lot about leather shoes and why they’re the number one option for a stylish outfit. I’ve even taken it one step further and discussed some unusual models, such as monk strap and saddle shoes.

But these leather shoes have one BIG problem: they become uncomfortable after walking in them for a few hours. Now, if it’s autumn or spring, you don’t have much of a choice. But if it’s summer, guess what?

There are a number of summer shoes available and plimsolls are one of them. They’re comfy, they’re trendy and you can get them for less than $50.

Why are plimsolls so great?

Plimsolls, when part of the right outfit, will give you that laid back look that you should project all summer long. While plimsolls are considered a type of athletic shoe, it’s ok to wear them in casual situations.

Matching your plimsolls

Needless to say, you need to match them with the rest of your outfit. Let’s take this model right here:

This will go great with a white canvas belt. Since you’re putting together a casual look, a thick belt is the only way to go.

The secret to matching plimsolls is to repeat the color on the canvas. if they have blue, repeat the blue on your pants or t-shirt. Color repetition is a must when putting together a stylish outfit.

If you get a pair with two colors on them, make sure you repeat both of them in your outfit.

Taking care of your plimsolls

The biggest problem plimsolls have is the white rubber sole, which gets dirty very easily. What I recommend is to wash the sides of the sole with a moist cloth after each wear. if you don’t do this, in time, that white will eventually turn to grey.
