A lot of people have a rather outdated view of what older men should look like. Maybe they picture it being all about oversized jumpers, sweater vests or socks and sandals. And while comfort is a key factor when it comes to clothes, that doesn’t mean you have to throw out your suave styling when you hit a certain age. An enjoyment of fashion and style doesn’t disappear as you get older.

There are countless examples of silver haired celebrities who use beautifully tailored suits and sublime styling to look just as fresh as any man in his twenties. Day after day, these men remain easy on the eye, even as they move into their later years.

Here are just five fantastically stylish men in the public eye who quite literally stand out above the rest for their uncompromising, enigmatic styles.

Jeff Goldblum

Source: @JeffGoldblum

The 66-year-old legend Jeff Goldblum is almost as well-known for his charisma as he is his acting chops. There’s no doubt that, alongside his charms, a huge part of the unforgettable impression he leaves on people is to do with his immaculate fashion sense.

Much more flamboyant than many of his peers, Goldblum is never afraid to add a dash of colour to his outfit. He always manages to pull off these more vibrant ‘out there’ looks by knowing exactly where the bad taste line is and never crossing it. He is proof that you can be creative with your dress sense without needing to go overboard.

Goldbum always manages to pull off these more vibrant ‘out there’ looks by knowing exactly where the bad taste line is and never crossing it.

Bryan Ferry

The former Roxy Music frontman shows no signs of slowing down as he approaches his 74th year. It’s quite hard to imagine Bryan Ferry without his trademark suits and tuxedos. He’s become so synonymous with impeccable tailoring that his image is burned into fans’ mind as his trademark look.

However, he does also have a more casual side. He dresses down with a more rugged American style, with a trademark touch of zest coming from some more colourful options to contrast the old trucker’s denim. Bryan Ferry doesn’t have as varied a wardrobe as our last entry, but he shows that a few good looks can really go a long way.

Pierce Brosnan

Source: @PierceBrosnanOfficial

Just like out last pick, it’s hard to imagine Pierce Brosnan when he’s not sporting a suit – and that’s not just because he looked so dashing in one during his stint as James Bond.

The Irish actor is quite a conservative dresser, and his outfits are not as inventive as some of Goldblum’s looks. However, he is a perfect example of how an older man can continue to look fantastic without needing to reinvent the wheel fashion-wise. Brosnan’s classic style is proof that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Brosnan is a perfect example of how an older man can continue to look fantastic without needing to reinvent the wheel fashion-wise.

Stephan Winkelmann

Although much less well-known to all but car enthusiasts, Stephan Winkelmann – the CEO of Bugatti, and formerly the president of Lamborghini – certainly has a lot of pressure to look the part considering the elite nature of the companies he has been in charge of.

While we are certainly not going to suggest he looks better than a Bugatti – few things do –, he does manage to look as though he belongs at the head of such a stylish company. He’s German born but has lived in Italy for most of his life, and that really sums up his style. It’s sensible but with an undeniable flair.

Phillip Schofield

Source: @schofe

He’s perhaps not as much of a style icon as some of the other men on the list, but Phillip Schofield’s simple approach to fashion is one that he pulls off with undeniable success. Not only that but it’s a straightforward, elegant way of dressing that doesn’t cost a fortune or require painstaking styling to emulate in your own dress sense.

Usually seen in a simple shirt and trousers combination, this can be spruced up with a top-quality jacket. We even see him get creative from time to time. It’s an ideal look that can take you effortlessly from day to night, without the need to strap on a tie.

Ah, double denim. The look we all love to hate. But if Britters and Timberlake could pull it off way back in the year 2001 – that was 16 years ago by the way, wow – you definitely can too. Perhaps you could even convince your partner to give it a go as well?

So if you’ve decided to dabble in double denim, here’s how to get the look all year round:

Don’t double up shades

Refrain from wearing the same shade of denim on your top and bottom half, unless you want to look like you’re wearing overalls akin to the kind Lennie adorns in Of Mice and Men – we’re taking you way back to secondary school now – ensure you mix up the shades. And when we refer to denim, it doesn’t just mean the blue variety. Black jeans and a blue denim shirt are a good combo, while white double denim makes a bold statement and looks great in the summer.

Darker denim on the bottom

man in double-denim

Always put the darker denim shade on the bottom, this ensures you avoid a ‘top heavy’ look and the slimming qualities of a darker denim on the leg still have effect even if you remove the denim jacket later.

Go for structure

It’s a good idea to create a double denim look with a pair of fitted jeans and a structured jacket, you’ll discover denim in shops all year round – if you’re looking for something a little different, Superdry’s denim biker jacket design is a great alternative style, from their men’s coats collection. Denim is just as versatile as leather and considered a staple piece too, but be sure to choose a jacket with structured shoulders, a sharp collar and bold stitching to stand out against your darker jeans.

Always put the darker denim shade on the bottom, this ensures you avoid a ‘top heavy’ look.

Accessories are important

It’s a good idea to break up double denim with some well placed accessories. This could mean a thick belt to draw attention to your waist or a chunky knitted scarf if you’re heading out in a neutral colour.

Choose black denim for a safe option

If you want to create a double denim look, but are a little nervous about matching blue denim, go for black instead. Pair skinny black jeans with pointed ankle boots, a plain white t-shirt and a structured black denim jacket for laid back, rock star vibe. Finish off with a grey beanie and choose jeans with ripped knees for a more relaxed look.

Double denim? Triple is where it’s at

Alternatively, if you want to push your style choices one step further you could opt for triple denim. A structured denim jacket over a lightweight denim shirt complemented by some fitted denim jeans is a stylish look that only the most confident of guys can pull off – check out menswear blogger Carl Thompson’s post on how to put this look together.

So now that you have the know-how, it’s time to grab that denim in the wardrobe and pull it all on at once, right?

It is that time of year when I purchase myself something to get over the winter blues that late January brings. With this I have been researching carry-on suitcases for males which I think are stylish. I have no particular budget as of yet but I will list the top choices I feel make the list.

Due to constantly traveling between States and even countries in Europe, I require a bag that meets all the standard rules of a carry-on case. This is so that when full I don’t get hassle from the check-in clerk or have to pay for a checked-in piece of luggage. As I am sure many of you will appreciate, the cost of taking luggage on flights can be actually more that the cost of the flight.

In no  particular order here are 4 carry on bags which have great quality and style.

4. Continental Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-on by Tumi

This suitcase by Tumi for me is the number one choice for a carry-on piece of luggage for style. However the only issue I find with this bag is that the price is $675 which I feel is a little steep. The price though I feel does reflect the quality of the components used in the make up of this, it oozes style and quality. The way to justify the price tag would eb divide the time with the bag divided by the cost. I think this bag could last anywhere between 3-5 years without issue taking the cost down to $200 per year. Divide this again by the number of journeys and the cost  goes down.

3. American Tourister Splash Spin LTE 20″ Spinner

This USA Branded suitcase is designed specifically for the traveller with the bag meet all the regulations of carry-on luggage of the major airlines. The price of this is less than $60 which is fantastic value for the piece and offers a quality product. Whilst it won’t last longer or is not as stylish as the Tumi carry on, this will definitely last and is a great addition to our list.

2. Travelpro Platinum Magna 2

This 22-inch Travelpro offers the best balance of size, price, reliability, and durability, with high-end details. The bag makes our number 2 position and we can fully recommend this to our readers. At  a price of over $200 this is not cheap but we feel this is a perfect mix between style and price. Order your TravelPro today and save 30% from the usual price.

1.Kirkland Signature Upright 21.5″ Black Carry-on

Another fantastic choice from Costco, the price of $100 makes this the best value for the style and quality. This is a perfect carry-on suitcase for travellers and business people alike. For stylish males this is also a great choice. Between this and the Tumi option we feel both offer the same results yet $400 difference.

We often get asked by readers what smart watch we recommend not only for the style but for the functionality. With this we have created a list of 4 smart watches that we love. We have combined price, style and technology to come up with our list. With technology changing at the fastest rate ever seen, some of these watches will be sure to become dated, however we have included several with inter-changeable bands, this allows for the wearer to change depending on personal preference.

In no particular order here is our list of the most stylish smart watches on the market this year.

Apple iWatch

No list of smart watches is complete without the Apple watch, by updating the first edition the second entry now has GPS and is waterproof, both of which were missing in the previous version.

OS: watchOS 3 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.53″ OLED | Processor: S2 dual-core | Onboard storage: 8GB (only 2GB and 75MB allowed for music and photos, respectively) | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: IPX7 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC

Samsung Gear S2

We love this watch from Samsung. The company has made the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons but we definitely love this entry. The different features of the watch are a rotating bezel and Tizen OS are genuinely great.

The screen contains AMOLED with it being sharper and more vibrant than other models. We also love the circular shape which we feel is great for style. The screen has the same ppi as the Apple iWatch.

Moto 360

The Motorola have released their entry to the market with the latest smartwatch which is also amazingly stylish for any man. The operating system is Andriod with Wireless charging also available.

Tag Heuer Connected

We have included this Tag Heuer because of the style and not really the price. With a tag of over $2,000 this is not for the faint hearted, however this will last many years without issue. Whilst other people are going through their 4th /5th smart watch Tag owners will still have the watch working perfectly.

Cold Outside? If there’s one thing I hate is cold and being cold. Sure, mom’s tips for keeping warm work well but what if you want to be stylish?

I’ve talked about a few of my winter recommendations (which aren’t going to change that much over the years) but now it’s time to put the emphasis on warmth.

When Paris sneezes, Europe catches cold.

– Metternich

Tip #1: winter hats to the rescue

Not many guys stick to wearing the three staples that can keep them warm. I’m not entirely sure but I think this is also because their mothers nagged them about this all the time when they were little. As a result, most guys will go defenseless against cold temperatures, then wonder why they still have that cold.

Wear a pair of gloves, a wool scarf and a winter hat.

Here’s the thing. Research showed that a lot of the body heat is lost through our head. Thus, a beanie or even a simple fedora hat can stop or slow down this process if you’ll just WEAR ONE.

Hats are cool, just stay away from anything sporty or with logos on them. Go for a beanie like David Becham’s:

And if you don’t like that it’s hanging on your neck – that’s okay. Just go for something simple. The trick is to wear something other than black. Go for grey, beige, light blue or even a bolder color such as red. Choose a pattern if you want, then match the beanie to the rest of your outfit.

You may be thinking that I’m making a big fuss about a simple fashion item, but think about this: how many choices do you have to stand out when it FREEZING outside? Not too many.

By wearing a (wool) beanie you can draw attention to your facial frame and thus, yourself. you can then use color to match the beanie with either your gloves or your wool scarf.

Red beanie, red wool scarf
or
Grey and white beanie, grey and white wool gloves

Tip #2: gloves are back… and they’re more stylish than ever

Which reminds me: gloves don’t come just in leather. You have a more stylish option (though it won’t do a better job at keeping you warm):

Wool fingerless gloves.

The thing about fingerless gloves is that they give you mobility when you want to answer your mobile phone or if you want to change the tune on your iPhone. While they won’t keep the tips of your fingers warm, they do open up new possibilities to stand out from the crowd and impress women.

Tip #3: Wool Scarves with an Attitude

You saw this coming, didn’t you? Keep you cotton scarves for warmer days and get something that really keeps you warm when it’s freezing. That one minute that it takes you to fold your scarf may very well save you from an ugly cold that can keep you homesick for days.

Unless you’re wearing a lot of camel-colored coats, you should opt-in for a wool scarf in a light or even a bold color. For instance, you can pair a black or a navy blue winter coat with a wool scarf that can be: red, yellow light green, olive green, light blue, medium blue and so on.

If, on the other hand you’re wearing a camel coat, go for a darker red or even a dark brown scarf. That’s going to create that contrast you should be having between your coat and your scarf.

And if you don’t want to make a contrast between the two – that’s cool too. But keep in mind you’ll need some skill to pull that one off. As my style student, though, I’m sure you can do it.

Tip #4: Keep your autumn coats for… Autumn

Seriously. if you have a leather jacket or a trench coat, don’t wear them when it’s freezing outside. No, I don’t care how many sweaters you’re wearing underneath. Choose the right coat for the right temperature and you’ll be fine.

Go for a classic overcoat, a pea coat, a duffle coat, a parka or an aviator jacket. The parka is not one of my favorites but it does have a hood that can protect you from wind.

So I just got back from the mall a couple of hours ago. I was there with my buddies scouting for some boots for the upcoming winter. We ran into a guy, a friend of their, who works for a really stylish men’s clothing store in my city.

The funny part was we met him yesterday as well and, as you can probably imagine, he was really well dressed. Sports coat, pocket square, stylish chinos – you name it.

But today, his outfit totally surprised me. Not only it was too casual for a walk in the mall but it broke some really basic style rules as well.

He was wearing a hoodie, jeans and a baseball cap. The cap as well as the hoodies even had writings on them. And I know I should have had a strong reaction to this but… something happened.

Instead of silently laughing at his outfit, it felt… quite refreshing. Such sporty outfits look so comforting that I wished I could switch my denim shirt and loafers with him just for a minute, to feel more comfortable.

That’s what happens when you wear too many preppy style outfits. 🙂

If you’re in the same situation as me, I want to give you a few pointers for dressing casual. If you want, you can try it next Sunday.

I’m gonna make things really simple and give you a complete outfit to wear, from head to toe. Here it is:

– jeans
– a shirt
– a hoodie
– a baseball cap
– and pair of sneakers of our choice

Besides the fit, which has to be perfect as always, let me give you a secret ingredient that will make this casual outfit a lot more fun: color. If you can do some color matching, you’ll look amazing.

f you live in the UK, I recommend investing in Henri Lloyd knitwear this season. You may also want to get Weekend Offender hoody for the more casual days, in case you don’t already have one sitting around in your closet..

Another good reason to try this outfit: you’ll end up with clothes that you can wear around the house every day of the week.

Good luck!

If you’re bored tying the same tie knot every morning, I have an amazing knot for you that I’m sure you’ll love. The Eldredge Knot is, without a doubt, harder to pull but the results are stunning.

This is a wide knot so, to pull it off you need a shirt with wide spread. To make it look good you need a patterned tie and… lots of practice.

Here’s a list of the best youtube videos I found. I’m putting more of them in case they get pulled down as time goes by. It’s always safe to have backup videos that work.

Although I think that, in the second video, he should have used a wider spread collar to make it look great, it’s the step-by-step instructions that we’re interested in.

Here we go:

]]>
When it comes to matching blazers (or sports jackets) with shirts, guys get a little confused. The bad news is there’s no straight answer to this. The good news is that there are dozens (even hundreds) of combinations you can try.

Blazers have “casual” written all over them.

That’s why the choice of shirt is very wide. Very wide indeed. So let’s start with the blazer, because I assume you’ll buy less blazers than suits (obviously).

The “big idea” is to get one or two blazers and 5 or 6 shirts that you can wear interchangeably. All shirts should match either one or both blazers.

When choosing a blazer, you can opt for one with or without a pattern. Personally I recommend you get the first one in a solid color and the second one in either pinstripe or checks.

This way you’ll achieve two things:

1. Keep you on the safe side when matching blazers and shirts
2. Give you more freedom of choice when matching patterned shirts (otherwise you would have to match two patterns – not an easy thing to do)

The solid colored blazer

OK, so you’re off to buy a solid color blazer. You can go for a “safe” color or for something a little edgy – your choice. Safe (non)colors include: black, navy blue, dark blue, dark brown and different shades of gray.

If this is your first blazer, I recommend you go for one of these colors. The best part is that these “safe” colors are in fact neutrals, meaning they will work with pretty much any shirt in your closet, as long as they contrast with them.

If you’re wearing a black, navy or gray blazer, a light blue or a white shirt are the obvious choices.

The Golden Rule of Blazers: always try to make a contrast between the blazer and the shirt. Always. Yes, there are exceptions but unless you’re trying a more advanced outfit, you shouldn’t worry about them. For now, stick with a good contrast.

So if you’re wearing a black blazer, you have to remember that black works with everything except brown and navy blue.

With that said, you can wear a wide variety of light colors. You can stick with a simple white shirt but that would be pretty boring (unless you add a white pocket square). You can go for pale colors such as pale blue, pale yellow etc.

Another thing you can do is go for patterned shirts with your black/blue/gray blazer. I usually wear my black blazer with a checked shirt (white shirt blue checks) or a striped shirt (light blue and blue alternating stripes).

Sometimes, when I want to go crazy, I like to wear a pink shirt. The combination is eye-popping but the blazer’s color is there to make sure my outfit is still on the safe side. This is something you might want to wear when going to a club, for instance.

What about a brown blazer? A white shirt is the best thing you can pair it with (white shirts are very versatile, by the way).

Now let’s talk a little about blazers in bold colors. If the blazer is in a bold color, the secret is to wear a shirt in a “safe” color. You don’t want to mix a red blazer with a bright blue shirt – trust me.

So what color choices do you have? Here’s a few and I recommend that you stick with them. If the bold color is not in the list – don’t buy the blazer:

– white
– red
– light blue

Wear a white or a red blazer with a black shirt. Wear light blue blazers with either a black or a white shirt.

Patterned blazers

Wearing a patterned blazer can be difficult but the final result will most likely impress everyone. Take a look at the photo below.

By far the easiest pattern you can wear is the pinstripe. Pinstripes are very thin vertical stripes on a blazer or a suit jacket:

Matching a pinstripe blazer with a shirt is just like matching a solid color blazer. The pinstripes are almost invisible BUT…

the really cool thing you could do is to repeat the color of the pinstripes. Color repetition is great in any outfit.

Some really cool patterns…

Let’s take for instance this checked blazer. It’s made of tweed so you wear it on colder autumn and spring days. In the picture below, the guy paired it with a madras shirt (not a bad result though I’m not a fan of the madras shirt).

Here’s another checked blazer with a simple white shirt:

photo: curiousgraffiti.tumblr.com

If you’re a newbie, simply wearing a patterned blazer with a uni shirt is enough. But if you want to go for a two patterns (pattern over a pattern), I definitely encourage you to try it before dismissing it as not being for you.

To contrast or not to contrast

If you’re somewhat advanced, you might get bored following the same old style rules. Some folks like to break them every once in a while. So how about you match, just this once, a blazer and a shirt of the same color? Mmmm, maybe the colors can be of slightly different shades.

Well, as long as you don’t do this with black or with bold or with colors that are too light, this might actually work.

For example, how about a dark blue blazer with a slightly lighter shirt? Or, the same thing only with brown?

I’m not even gonna show you photos of these, I want you to try experiment on yourself and, if you want, you can share the results with everyone else by placing a comment below.
