We live in a world of endless opportunity. Being surrounded by so much choice, it can be difficult at times to know what we want — for our career, relationships, direction in life, and so on. However, the hardest decision of all can be knowing what to have for dinner.

After a long week, the last thing you want to do is get through the door on a Friday night and scour a cookbook to work out what you fancy making. Sometimes, you could instead benefit from a little outside influence to tell you exactly what you should cook. Here’s a guide for knowing what to do for dinner when you have no clue what you want.

What are you drinking?

Traditionally, the choice of what to drink depends on what meal you’re eating. There are even online guides which can be used to match our booze to our food, such as this wine pairing wheel from Pasta Evangelists. Guides like these are useful for combining a beverage’s flavour profile to the meal you have in mind, bringing out the best in your food. But what do you do if you can’t think of what to cook in the first place?

To avoid this vicious circle causing a crisis in the kitchen, you can flip the idea on its head and pick your drink first. If you get in and you’re feeling parched for a glass Sauvignon Blanc, you only have to search for what dishes pair best with a dry white — for example, a light and bright garlic shrimp risotto. If you opt for a soft drink like cola, you might want to pair it with smoky red meat, think hamburgers or Korean short ribs. If you can at least pick what you’ll be sipping on, then you can fit one piece of the puzzle and let the others fall into place.

What’s about to expire?

If the overwhelming choice of refreshments leaves you staring blankly at the shelves in your fridge, let’s try something else. While you’re there, look at what produce you have that will expire soon, and work out a dish from there.

Better yet, apps like SuperCook can do the heavy lifting for you — simply type in the ingredients you’ve got into the app, and let it work its magic to show you only recipes that will use these ingredients. BigOven works similarly, letting you browse by innovative categories like ‘Use Up Leftovers’. Failing that, a simple ‘recipes with…’ Google search will do the job. No more running out to buy more ingredients, and no more cans stacked up at the back of the fridge with a 2012 use-by date — if it’s about to go off, skip the indecision and jump straight to getting it cooked.

What’s the weather like?

For divine inspiration, look to the skies. If the sun is shining and the birds are singing, you might enjoy a lighter meal without that heavy feeling. For times like these, green options such as a greek salad or fish-based dishes like miso salmon are ideal. As for the winter months, hearty casseroles and warming soups are the way to go.

The seasons don’t just change our appetites, but also the kinds of produce available on store shelves. Pay attention to what veg is seasonal at the moment, and let this guide your meal prep. During summer, fresh fruit and veg like cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers are in abundance, whereas autumn and winter bring us squashes, beets and carrots. To make your choice, think about the time of year and opt for meals that use seasonal produce.

How much time do you have?

If you’ve been staying late at the office or you’re heading out for a big night, you might be strapped for time. In this case, you have every excuse to prepare a lazy meal using whatever you have laying around. We wouldn’t recommend ready-meals, as they’re rarely a healthy option — but it’s easy to throw together a one-pot pasta with some leafy greens for a more balanced bite to eat.

Alternatively, you might have time to kill and practise some culinary therapy. Take your time to prepare something a little more indulgent, such as a hotpot that you can leave bubbling for a few hours while you see friends or get on with chores. Not everything has to be scrupulously planned in advance — let the schedule of your day dictate what you’ll be dining on.

If you keep in mind these simple check-ins for when indecision hits, you’ll never again wonder what to have for dinner when you have no clue what you want to eat.

Do you enjoy the combination of a sumptuous brunch and an equally alluring cocktail? If so, the ability to experience a bottomless brunch in New York City should never be missed. The good news is that many locations cater to this desire and some are associated with truly stellar levels of customer service. Let’s examine a handful of the top spots to better understand what to expect upon your arrival.

Planta Queen NYC

Many online bottomless brunch reviews have touted the numerous amenities which Planta Queen has to offer. First and foremost, this speakeasy bar affords excellent views of the Manhattan skyline; a nice touch when sipping on a tasty drink and when partaking from their extremely diverse menu. It has been said that their French toast is particularly delectable and their environmentally friendly approach is a nice touch. Planta Queen is open for lunch, dinner and late-night orders.

The Crooked Knife

The Crooked Knife is great if you are looking for an all-in-one menu. It provides bottomless mimosas and an entire meal for a mere $42 dollars (quite cheap when compared to some other locations in New York City). The Crooked Knife is located in Murray Hill and it is open seven days a week. Be sure to contact a representative to make a reservation in advance.

Agave

This next choice is known for its impressive selection of Southwestern American dishes (as the name suggests). Agave offers up a delectable margarita and the presentation of the food itself is phenomenal. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that you can purchase an all-you-can eat meal for only $33 dollars. Note that this includes two hours of on-the-house drinks. Be sure to bring an empty stomach, as Agave should never be missed.

Taco Vision

It has often been claimed that margaritas and tacos enjoy a hand-in-hand relationship. If you are a firm believer in this observation, Taco Vision represents a dream come true. This bar-restaurant is found within the heart of Midtown Manhattan and it offers outdoor dining during the more pleasant times of the year. Taco Vision offers a selection of endless drinks and food for $40 dollars, so be sure to take advantage of such a generous offer!

POCO

The term poco can be translated to “little” in Spanish and yet, there is certainly nothing diminutive about what this establishment has to offer. Poco provides fried macaroni and cheese, mushroom truffles and even smoked lobster (amongst other dishes). Also, they offer up to 90 minutes of bottomless drinks (mimosas and sangria). Why not rent a party bus in New York to take advantage of what this venue has in store without having to worry about the commute?

New York City offers numerous possibilities if you have been looking to experience a bottomless brunch in style. Please feel free to take a closer look at these locations to make the right decision. Either way, get ready to have a blast!

Much like a person that does CrossFit, you’ll know right away if you’re dealing with an IPA drinker—they’ll tell you right away. There’s something about IPAs that always leaves people trying to go bigger, harder, stronger with the flavours of the Indian Pale Ale. Perhaps it’s the strength of the hops. Perhaps it’s the bitterness of the beer. Either way, if you’re an IPA-lover, there are a few notable styles you need to try.

The English IPA

It would be unfair to talk about IPA without first giving a nod to England, the accidental creators of the drink. British sailors traveling to India would add hops to the beer, as it acted as a natural preservative. During these long boat journeys, the longer addition of hops would lead to a loss of fruity taste, and an addition of bitterness. This became the IPA as we first knew it.

Therefore, any IPA drinker needs a classic English IPA. These beers are light in colour, usually a pale gold. They are light, citrusy, and grassy, and are celebrated worldwide. New Zealand beer, Australian beer, and American beer all take notes from the English IPA. Many create their own versions of the first true IPA.

West Coast IPA

While this could be any west coast of the world, this specifically refers to America. More specifically? California. This IPA is made from using well-known American hops such as Chinook, Cascade, and Citra, which give these beers a citrusy taste with a very bitter profile. These IPAs can sometimes range very high in IBU, or international bittering units.

Double IPA

This is a classic IPA and is worth mentioning. As people became numb to the bitterness in their IPAs, brewers found a way to push boundaries. Enter the double IPA—more hops are used for a longer time. While this does create a sweetness due to the stronger alcohol, it is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. The result is a slightly sweet beer with a malty, hoppy backbone.

Triple IPA

This is worth noting due to its rarity. Many brewers will not regularly produce triple IPAs, which can vary in the 12-13% range for beer. Breweries might produce these once a year, and they typically sell out within days—sometimes, hours!

If you already enjoy beer, IPAs are a great next step. This popular and international beer is here to stay and continues to expand.

One of the most revered spirits around, single malt Scotch whisky is considered the ‘original’ whisky of Scotland.

Whilst single malt whisky—a whisky made only from malted barley in one distillery—has long been popular, it wasn’t until 1963 that it was marketed outside of Scotland. Now consumed across the world, single malt Scotch should be a staple in your whisky collection.

Ardbeg

Amassing an abundance of awards down the years, from Whisky Bible’s World Whisky of the Year to World’s Best Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards, Ardbeg is an essential single malt Scotch whisky for your collection.

First made in 1815 by the MacDougall family, Ardbeg’s classic 10-Year-Old whisky is celebrated for its intensely smoky and peaty flavour—in fact, some of the world’s smokiest drams are made at the Ardbeg distillery, on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The initial smokiness gives way to the malt’s natural sweetness for a perfectly balanced, award-winning Scotch. Other whiskies made by the distillery include the Corryvreckan and Uigeadail editions, which feature pepper and sherry flavours respectively.

The initial smokiness gives way to the malt’s natural sweetness for a perfectly balanced, award-winning Scotch.

The Ardbeg distillery has run into trouble in the past, falling foul of the global whiskey downturn in the late 1970s, which resulted in a period of almost total idleness up until 1997. It was at this point that Glenmorangie PLC decided to take over the distillery, and set about restoring it to its former glory. The Ardbeg distillery has flourished since and, thanks to Glenmorangie’s intervention, you can still get hold of its whisky with ease.

Talisker

Regularly winning honours at the World Whiskies Awards and San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Talisker is another acclaimed single malt Scotch that should be high up on your list of prospective buys.

Its flagship 8 Year-Old single malt is renowned for its striking peated and smoky flavour, with Talkiser’s peaty process water coming from the twenty-one underground springs near the distillery. Its unique flavour emanates from the peat burned during the malting process, whilst hints of black pepper, soft fruits, cereal, and vanilla also come through. The distillery produces an extensive range of whiskies, including Skye, Dark Storm, and a number of more mature bottles. This includes their Talisker 27-year-old bottle, which has a current market value of around £475. These rare edition whiskies are highly coveted by collectors, and can fetch up to £2,000 at auction.

Cragganmore

Cragganmore was first made in 1869, when its namesake distillery opened in the Banffshire village of Ballindalloch. The whisky and its distillery take their name from the mountain that casts a shadow over the distillery, the 1,600ft Craggan More mountain, which translates from Gaelic as “big rock”.

Cragganmore’s 12 Years Old whisky is characterised by its rich, floral taste, with spice, citrus, and fruit flavours also coming through as it matures. It uses lightly peated malt, and requires a long fermentation process using distinctively shaped stills, which have a flat top and short neck instead of a conical neck like most other pot stills. This distinctive shape is said to be one of the reasons behind the unique taste and aroma of Cragganmore whisky, with the late Scotch whisky author Michael Jackson commenting that Cragganmore whisky has “the most complex aroma of any malt”.

Dalwhinnie

The final single malt Scotch whisky brand we recommended to add to your whisky collection is Dalwhinnie, which has been eulogised by critics and connoisseurs alike. Its numerous gold awards in both the International Wine and Spirit Competition and San Francisco World Spirits Competition are a testament to just how highly regarded this Highlands whisky is.

Dalwhinnie distillery was founded in 1898 by investors John Grant, Alex Mackenzie, and George Sellar, its site chosen for its proximity to the clear spring waters of Lochan-Doire-Uaine, and the peat from the surrounding bogs. It is also the highest distillery in Scotland, located a gargantuan 1154 ft above sea level.

Following on from our other drink reviews we are this week tasting Tequila Corralejo. Whilst we are not big tequila drinkers, with cinco de mayo only 7 weeks away we are happy to get in the spirit. We are currently based down in Tucson, Arizona and it is only right that we embrace the strong Mexican influence and taste their national drink.

Tequila Corralejo exemplifies Central Mexico’s rich culture, heritage and vibrant lifestyle. As one of the few tequilas produced in Guanajuato, Mexico, Corralejo’s deep roots and production methods are unique in the tequila industry. Made from only the finest agave, Tequila Corralejo’s flavor is rich, natural, and unsurpassed in quality and personality.

Made from only the finest agave, Tequila Corralejo’s flavor is rich, natural, and unsurpassed in quality and personality.

All of the tequilas are made with 100% Blue Weber Agave, which we handpick from only the finest agave fields. We slow cook our agave the old-fashioned way in stone clay ovens for 27 hours. After the cooking process, we rest the agave for 12 hours before it goes to the mill where the sweet juice is extracted. After the milling process, the juice goes to fermentation.

The Tequila Corralejo distillation process is very unique because we use a mixture of column stills and Alambic copper pot stills imported from Tomelloso, Spain. Tequila Corralejo employs the 400-year-old Charentais method of distillation, the same method perfected by the French in distilling cognac, which allows for exceptional retention of aroma and flavor. To capture the full flavor of the agave, our silver tequila is put to market fresh from the distillery. Tequila for the Reposado and Añejo goes to the barrel rooms to begin the aging process.

Templeton Rye the spirit, was born during Prohibition around 1920, originally referred to as rye whiskey made in Templeton, Iowa as a way for farmers in the Carroll County area to supplement their income. Local bootleggers, including famed Templeton resident Alphonse Kerkhoff, produced a high caliber, highly desired whiskey known locally as DzThe Good Stuff,dz which came to be known locally as Templeton Rye.Amber in color, it was thought to be of particularly high quality and was popular in Chicago, Omaha, and Kansas City speakeasies.

Templeton Rye was introduced in 2006 using a recipe that best matched the whiskey of Alphonse Kerkhoff.

It was said to be mafia leader Al Capone’s drink of choice and he reportedly served it to his closest friends and family. Templeton Rye was introduced in 2006 using a recipe that best matched the whiskey of Alphonse Kerkhoff. In October 2006, 68 barrels of Templeton Rye completed their four-year aging process, and became legally available on shelves in Iowa again, carrying on a family and small town tradition.

For the past decade, Templeton Rye has honored the history and the people of Templeton, building a new facility in town to create and bottle the rye locally. Templeton Rye uses a mash bill made up of 95% rye from MGP (formerly Lawrenceburg Distillers of Indiana) as its foundation. The distilled rye whiskey is brought to Templeton, Iowa, where it is finished with a proprietary formula and local purified water. The whiskey is then bottled in the production facility in Templeton

Whether you travel regularly on business or you simply enjoy discovering new cultures on your holidays, 2018 is almost certain to be a fascinating year if you’re passionate about your food.

2017 was all about the gluten-free produce, the mass-adoption of Japanese patisserie cheesecakes, and charcoal dishes rich in minerals and vitamins. So, what is the world likely to be eating more of during the next 12 months? Check out these five emerging food trends that could be coming to a restaurant near you.

Vegan and meat-free dishes

Increasing numbers of people are choosing to adopt a vegan diet, free of meat and dairy products. This plant-based diet is becoming big business, especially in the UK and the Netherlands. In the UK this year, tens of thousands of people have signed up to Veganuary, a concept which encourages people to sample a vegan diet for the entirety of January. Meanwhile, the Netherlands is anticipating ‘faux meat’ alternatives to make an impact, with the likes of jackfruit replacing pulled pork in burgers and burritos and chicken swapped for seitan as meat-free meals continue to spread across the mass market.
